Rigging a Camera Safely to a Climbing Harness
People assume climbing photography means the camera is clipped straight to the harness. In practice, that's rarely how it actually works, and understanding why changes how you should think about carrying gear on any climbing shoot.

Climbing photography sits at an unusual intersection of two disciplines that don't always overlap, technical climbing knowledge and photographic skill, and gear rigging is exactly where that intersection matters most in practice. A photographer without real climbing experience can make choices here that look reasonable on paper but create genuine risk once actually tested on the wall. Everything that follows comes from that intersection, not from photography theory alone.
Why the Harness Itself Isn't the Answer
The instinct to clip a camera directly to a harness makes sense on the surface. It seems like the obvious attachment point. In practice, it creates a real problem: a harness clip limits your upward mobility. If you need to move past or above the climber you're shooting, which happens constantly on a real climbing shoot, a camera clipped directly to your harness gets in the way at exactly the moment you need to move freely.
This is one of those lessons that's obvious once you've felt the problem firsthand but isn't obvious at all if you're planning a climbing shoot from a desk. The harness is built for the climber's own safety system, not as a mounting point for carrying gear you need quick, flexible access to. Every gear loop and attachment point on a harness is designed around a specific function related to climbing safety, and repurposing that system for camera storage competes with the exact function it was built for.
There's also a weight distribution issue that isn't obvious until you've actually climbed with a camera attached to your harness. Gear hanging low and forward off a harness changes your center of balance in a way that affects footwork and body positioning on technical terrain. It's a subtle shift, but on already-demanding climbing, a subtle shift in balance is exactly the kind of thing that matters.
There's also a practical noise and snag consideration that's easy to overlook until it causes a problem. A camera swinging or clipped somewhere on a harness can catch on rock features, ropes, or other gear in ways that are at best distracting and at worst genuinely hazardous. Keeping gear close to the body and secured against unwanted movement isn't just about protecting the camera, it's about not introducing an unnecessary snag risk into an already technical environment.
I'd also add that every climbing shoot is different enough, in terms of route, exposure, and the specific climbers involved, that a rigid one-size-fits-all rigging plan doesn't really exist. What I'm describing here are the underlying principles I always apply, not a single fixed setup I use identically on every climb. Adapting the specifics to the actual route and conditions in front of me, while keeping the core safety principles constant, is what real experience in this kind of shoot actually looks like.
How I Actually Carry the Camera While Climbing
If I'm climbing with the camera myself, rather than shooting a climber from a fixed position, the camera goes in a backpack while I'm actually climbing. This keeps my hands and movement completely free for the climb itself, and it protects the gear from impact against the rock during moves where a loose or exposed camera would be at real risk.
This might sound like it limits spontaneity, since the camera isn't immediately accessible mid-climb. In practice, climbing shoots are planned enough, in terms of where the key moments are likely to happen, that this tradeoff is manageable. The camera comes out at the position where the shot actually needs to happen, not throughout the entire ascent.
There's also a real safety argument for keeping the camera stowed rather than accessible during the climb itself. Any moment spent reaching for or handling a camera mid-move is a moment of divided attention on terrain where full attention matters. Accepting that I won't catch every possible moment, in exchange for staying fully present and safe during the actual climbing movements, is a tradeoff I've made deliberately rather than something I see as a limitation to work around.
I also pack the backpack itself with the camera's position in mind, not just tossed in wherever there's room. Padding it against harder items, positioning it so a fall or impact against the pack doesn't transmit directly to the camera body, and keeping it accessible enough that I'm not fully unpacking the bag at the moment I actually need it. Small details like this add up to meaningfully less wear on gear over a season of regular climbing shoots.
I've also learned to think about the specific pitch or section of a climb before deciding when the camera comes out of the bag. On easier, lower-consequence terrain, I'm comfortable pausing to shoot mid-climb. On harder or more exposed sections, the camera stays stowed until I reach a genuinely secure stance, even if that means missing a moment on the harder terrain itself. That judgment call is something that gets sharper with experience on a specific type of route, and it's worth being conservative about early on rather than assuming you can read the terrain correctly on the first few climbing shoots.
The backpack itself is also worth choosing deliberately rather than using whatever general-purpose pack happens to be on hand. A pack designed with climbing in mind, one that sits close to the body, doesn't interfere with harness gear loops, and has a low enough profile not to throw off balance on technical moves, makes a real difference over the course of a full day compared to a generic daypack that wasn't built with any of those considerations in mind.
How I Rig the Camera When Shooting From the Wall
When I'm shooting a climber from a fixed position on the wall myself, rather than climbing alongside them, the camera connects to my system differently. It attaches via a strap, a daisy chain, or a double-length sling connected to the backpack, rather than directly to the harness. This gives me a secure connection that keeps the camera from falling if I drop it, without restricting the upward mobility a harness clip would limit.
The specific method, strap versus daisy chain versus sling, depends on the exact shoot and how much range of motion I need in that position. What stays consistent across all of them is the underlying principle: the camera needs a secure backup connection, but that connection can't come at the cost of my own mobility and safety on the wall.
I also think carefully about connection length in this setup. Too short, and the camera can't reach a comfortable shooting position without pulling awkwardly against the tether. Too long, and a dropped camera swings further and picks up more momentum before the tether catches it, which increases the risk of it hitting the rock face or a nearby climber. Getting that length right for a given position is something I adjust shoot to shoot rather than treating as a fixed setup.
Positioning myself on the wall relative to the climber I'm shooting matters just as much as the rigging itself. I try to stay far enough to the side that a dropped item, mine or theirs, wouldn't have a direct line toward me, while still being close enough to get the angle a shot actually needs. That kind of positioning becomes second nature over time, but it's a genuinely deliberate consideration on every new route or wall, not something to assume carries over automatically from the last shoot.
The specific hardware I use for these connections also matters, not just the general concept of a strap or sling. I favor climbing-rated hardware, actual carabiners and connectors built for load-bearing use, over generic camera-industry clips that were never designed with fall forces in mind. It's a small cost difference for a meaningful difference in what the connection can actually handle if it's ever tested by a real drop rather than just holding steady weight.
Communication with the climber I'm shooting also matters more in this setup than people might expect. A quick heads-up before I move into position, or before the climber makes a move I need to be ready for, keeps both of us aware of where the other is and reduces the chance of an awkward, unplanned interaction between my gear and their line of movement. Good climbing photography, at least the kind that stays genuinely safe, depends on that ongoing communication as much as it depends on the physical rigging itself.
Redundancy Isn't Optional
No matter which specific rigging method I'm using, I never rig gear without a backup tether. A single point of connection means a single point of failure, and on a climbing shoot, a dropped camera isn't just an expensive mistake, it's a real safety hazard for anyone below. Building in redundancy costs almost nothing in terms of setup time and removes an entire category of risk.
This same principle applies well beyond climbing. Any time gear is being carried in an unconventional position, hanging off a rig, secured in a moving vehicle, attached during any activity with real fall or drop risk, redundancy in how it's secured should be treated as mandatory, not optional. The setups that look impressive rarely fail. The ones that fail are usually the ones where someone assumed a single connection point was good enough.
I make a habit of visually checking every connection point before a climb starts, not just trusting that it was rigged correctly the first time. Gear shifts, straps loosen, and a connection that was solid an hour ago isn't guaranteed to still be solid now. That quick visual check takes seconds and has caught more than one loosened connection before it became a real problem.
I'd also add that talking through the gear setup with whoever else is on the climb, a climbing partner, a safety lead, another member of the shoot, is worth doing even when I'm confident in my own rigging. A second set of eyes catches things a single person can miss, especially when that person is also thinking about the shot they're about to take. Treating gear safety as something the whole team is aware of, not just something the photographer privately manages, adds a real layer of protection that costs almost nothing to build in.
I'd add one final principle that applies beyond climbing specifically: never let the pressure to get a shot override a safety judgment call, either your own or a climbing partner's. A missed shot is recoverable in a way that a safety compromise isn't, and the photographers I trust most on climbing shoots are the ones who've internalized that hierarchy completely, rather than treating it as something to remember only when explicitly reminded.
None of this level of detail is meant to make climbing photography sound more intimidating than it needs to be. Once these habits become routine, they don't slow anything down or take away from being present in the shoot. If anything, the opposite is true, knowing the gear is secured properly frees up mental bandwidth to actually focus on composition, timing, and the climber, rather than quietly worrying about whether something might come loose.
For anyone newer to shooting climbing specifically, I'd suggest starting on easier, lower-consequence routes with a climbing partner you trust completely, both to build comfort with the rigging itself and to develop the situational awareness that harder routes eventually demand. That kind of gradual progression, rather than jumping straight into exposed, technical terrain with a camera before the underlying habits are second nature, is how the photographers I respect most in this space actually built their skill set.
I'd also say that learning this specific niche of photography benefits enormously from actually being a climber yourself, or at minimum spending real time embedded with climbers, before trying to photograph the activity professionally. Understanding the sport from the inside, the pacing, the mental state at different points on a route, the actual risks involved, gives you an intuitive sense of where the meaningful moments happen and how to position yourself around them safely. That kind of embedded understanding is difficult to fake, and it shows in the difference between climbing photography made by someone who genuinely knows the sport and photography made by someone who's simply pointing a camera at climbers without that deeper context. That authenticity comes through in the final images just as much as it comes through in how safely the shoot itself gets handled, and clients who work in this space tend to notice the difference even when they can't articulate exactly why, choosing you for the next project largely on that earned trust rather than on portfolio images alone, since word travels fast within a genuinely tight-knit climbing community that talks to itself constantly.
