Acclimatizing to Altitude Before a Shoot Day, Not During It
The worst place to figure out you're not acclimatized is halfway up a summit approach, camera bag on your back, hours from where you started the day. Altitude sickness doesn't announce itself politely. It shows up as a headache you tell yourself is dehydration, then as nausea you tell yourself is just the exertion, and by the time it's undeniable, you're often too far in to easily turn around without losing the shot entirely.
I've learned to treat altitude acclimatization the same way I treat every other piece of pre-production: it happens before the shoot day, not during it. Waiting to see how your body handles elevation on the day you actually need to perform, both physically and creatively, is one of the more avoidable mistakes I see photographers make on mountain work. Why Altitude Changes More Than Just Your Stamina
The obvious effect of altitude is physical: reduced oxygen means reduced stamina, slower recovery between exertions, and a body working harder for the same output. But the less obvious effect, and the one that matters more for a photographer specifically, is cognitive. Altitude sickness impairs judgment and reaction time well before it becomes physically debilitating, and judgment is exactly what you need most when you're making creative and safety decisions in real time on a mountain.
A climber or mountaineer who's pushing through mild altitude symptoms can often still execute the physical task in front of them, one foot after another, because the movement itself is somewhat automatic. A photographer working through the same symptoms is trying to read light, frame a shot, track a subject's position, and make composition decisions, all of which require sharper cognitive function than the climb itself often does.
This is part of why I take altitude more seriously as a photographer than I might if I were purely a climber on the same route. My job on a mountain isn't just to get to the top safely, it's to make good creative decisions the entire way up, and that requires a level of mental clarity that altitude sickness compromises first, often before the physical symptoms are even obvious.
Building Acclimatization Into the Schedule, Not Around It
Commercial shoots often arrive with a fixed timeline set by a client, and it's tempting to treat acclimatization days as a luxury that gets cut when the schedule is tight. I push back on this whenever I can, because a shoot day compromised by altitude sickness costs more than the acclimatization time it would have taken to prevent it, both in the quality of the work and in basic safety.
When I'm planning a mountain shoot at meaningful elevation, I build acclimatization days into the proposal from the start rather than treating them as optional. That means presenting the timeline to a client with those days already factored into the cost and schedule, so it's not a negotiation that happens after the fact when time is already tight.
If a client's timeline genuinely can't accommodate proper acclimatization, I'd rather have that conversation upfront and adjust the shoot plan, maybe shooting at a lower elevation than originally hoped, than accept a schedule that sets everyone up to make the summit day worse than it needs to be.
What My Actual Acclimatization Process Looks Like
I try to spend at least one full day at an intermediate elevation before pushing to the altitude where the primary shoot day happens, following the same gradual-ascent principle climbers use. Sleeping at a lower elevation than the day's high point, even after a day of activity higher up, helps the body adjust more comfortably than sleeping at the highest point reached, which is a principle borrowed directly from mountaineering practice and one that applies just as much to a photographer supporting the climb as it does to the climbers themselves.
I also pay close attention to hydration and pacing during acclimatization days specifically, since dehydration symptoms and early altitude symptoms can look similar enough to mask each other. Overhydrating on the ascent days matters more than it does on lower-elevation shoots, and I build in more frequent breaks than I would at sea level, even when I feel fine.
The acclimatization period also gives me a chance to test gear performance at altitude before it matters for the actual shoot. Batteries drain faster in cold, thin air, and camera bodies can behave differently than they do at lower elevations. Working out those quirks during an acclimatization day, rather than discovering them on the shoot day itself, has saved more than one project from a preventable equipment surprise.
Reading Your Own Body Instead of Ignoring It
The early symptoms of altitude sickness are easy to explain away, especially when you're excited about a shoot and don't want to be the reason it gets delayed. A headache becomes "I probably just need water." Mild nausea becomes "it's probably something I ate." Fatigue becomes "I didn't sleep well." Any one of these explanations might be true in isolation, but at altitude, they're also the textbook early signs of something more serious.
I've made it a firm habit to actually name the symptom out loud to whoever I'm working with rather than quietly pushing through it. Saying "I've got a headache and I want to keep an eye on it" out loud does two things: it forces me to actually acknowledge what's happening instead of minimizing it internally, and it puts the rest of the team on notice in case things escalate.
This matters more for a photographer than it might for other team members, because the instinct to keep shooting through discomfort is strong. There's always another angle, another moment, another reason to push a little further before turning back. Building in an honest, ongoing check on your own condition is the only real defense against that instinct overriding good judgment.
What Changes About Directing a Shoot at Altitude
Beyond your own condition, altitude changes how you manage everyone else on a shoot. Subjects, whether they're professional athletes or non-professional talent, are dealing with the same reduced oxygen and cognitive load you are, which means direction needs to be simpler and more patient than it would at lower elevation. Complex instructions that would land fine at sea level can be harder to process and execute at altitude.
I also build in more recovery time between takes on high-altitude shoots than I would elsewhere. Asking a subject to repeat a physical action multiple times in a row taxes them more at altitude, and pushing for extra takes without accounting for that can turn a shoot day into a safety issue rather than just a creative one.
Communication style shifts too. I try to check in more explicitly with everyone on set at altitude, not just watching for obvious distress but actually asking how people are feeling at regular intervals. At sea level, that kind of check-in can feel unnecessary. At altitude, it's one of the simplest tools available for catching a problem before it becomes a real one.
How This Connects to Overall Risk Assessment
Altitude acclimatization isn't separate from the broader risk assessment I do before any shoot involving real exposure or elevation. It's one input into a bigger picture that includes weather, terrain, group experience level, and access to emergency support if something goes wrong. Treating acclimatization as its own isolated checklist item misses how much it interacts with every other risk factor on the day.
Poor acclimatization compounds and makes every other risk on a mountain shoot worse. A climber who's cognitively impaired from altitude sickness is a worse decision-maker on exposed terrain. A photographer who's not thinking clearly is more likely to make a positioning mistake near a drop-off or misjudge timing on a technical section. None of these risks exist in isolation, and acclimatization is one of the few variables in that whole picture that's actually within your control ahead of time.
That's part of why I treat it as non-negotiable pre-production rather than something to figure out in the field. Weather and light are largely out of my hands. How well-acclimatized the team is on shoot day is something I can actually plan for well in advance, and I'd rather spend the effort on the variable I can control than gamble on the ones I can't.
What I Tell Clients Who Push Back on Acclimatization Time
Occasionally a client's production timeline is tight enough that acclimatization days feel like an easy place to cut. My response is usually to walk through what actually happens if the team isn't properly acclimatized on shoot day: reduced ability to execute the shot list, higher risk of needing to turn back entirely, and a real possibility of losing the whole day rather than just some of it.
Framed that way, acclimatization time isn't a nice-to-have, it's insurance against losing the primary objective completely. Most clients understand that logic once it's laid out clearly, especially when they're weighing it against the cost of a wasted shoot day at altitude, which tends to be far more expensive in lost production value, rebooking costs, and delayed deliverables than an extra acclimatization day built into the original schedule ever would be.
When a client genuinely can't move the timeline, I look for alternatives: adjusting the target elevation, restructuring the shoot to rely more on drone or long-lens work from a lower, safer vantage point, or breaking the project into multiple shorter trips instead of one compressed push, each with its own acclimatization window built in from the start. The goal is always to protect the work and the team, even when that means the original plan has to bend.
Gear and Body Behavior at Altitude I've Learned the Hard Way
Cold, thin air changes battery performance more than most photographers expect until they've experienced it directly. A battery that lasts a full day at sea level can drop noticeably faster at elevation, especially when combined with cold temperatures common at higher camps. I carry more spare batteries than I think I'll need on any high-altitude shoot, and I keep them close to my body rather than in an outer pocket of the bag, since body heat slows the drain.
Camera bodies themselves can also behave differently, with autofocus sometimes hunting more in thin, cold air and LCD screens responding sluggishly to touch in extreme cold. None of this is usually catastrophic, but it's the kind of thing that's much easier to plan around if you've experienced it once during an acclimatization day rather than discovering it live during the one summit window you had.
My own body's altitude response has been fairly consistent across enough trips that I've learned to recognize my personal early warning signs specifically, which aren't always the textbook symptoms. For me it tends to show up first as a subtle change in appetite before anything else, well before a headache or noticeable fatigue ever sets in. Learning your own individual pattern, rather than relying purely on generic guidance, is part of what makes acclimatization planning more precise over time, and it's something I'd encourage any photographer working regularly at elevation to pay close attention to across their own trips rather than assuming everyone's early symptoms look the same.
Why I Don't Treat Every Mountain Shoot the Same Way
Not every mountain assignment carries the same altitude risk, and treating a moderate-elevation day hike the same as an extended summit push wastes planning effort in one direction and under-plans in the other. Part of my pre-production process is figuring out honestly where a given project actually falls on that spectrum before deciding how much acclimatization time it genuinely needs.
Most of my mountain work these days isn't shooting elite athletes pushing extreme limits, it's photographing friends and everyday clients enjoying the activity, which shifts both the risk profile and the acclimatization needs. A group of enthusiastic but non-expert mountaineers generally needs more conservative acclimatization planning than a team of experienced climbers would, since their bodies and their judgment under stress are both less proven quantities to me going in.
I also factor in how much of the shoot actually requires me to be at the highest elevation myself. Some projects only need summit-area footage that a drone or a subject wearing an action camera can capture, which changes how much of my own acclimatization time needs to match the climbing team's full itinerary versus a shorter, lower-risk window of my own.
The Conversation I Have With Myself Before Every High-Altitude Trip
Before any project that involves meaningful elevation gain, I run through a short, honest self-check: how recently have I been at altitude, how well did my body handle it last time, and has anything changed physically since then that might affect how I acclimatize this time around. That check happens well before travel, not the morning of departure, so there's still time to adjust the plan if something feels off.
I also think honestly about whether I'm bringing the right level of caution to a specific trip versus getting complacent because a previous high-altitude shoot went smoothly. Altitude sickness doesn't care how many successful trips came before it, and treating each new project as its own risk assessment, rather than assuming past success guarantees future success, has kept me from getting caught off guard on more than one occasion when conditions or my own body's response ended up different from what a prior trip had led me to expect.
This kind of self-check isn't glamorous, and it doesn't show up in the final images at all. But it's part of the invisible pre-production work that makes the visible work possible, and it's exactly the kind of discipline that separates a sustainable career shooting in demanding environments from a short one. It's also the kind of habit that's easy to skip when a trip feels routine, which is precisely when I try hardest to still run through it in full.
