Santa Cruz Surf Wall Art for Your Home

If you are looking for Santa Cruz surf wall art, you have probably seen plenty of it. Most of it is either a generic wave on a stock beach or a painting that could be from anywhere. I wanted something different, so I made The Stairwell, a real surf photograph shot in Santa Cruz, California, by someone who lived there for five years and has been surfing since the age of eight. Here is what makes it worth a place on your wall.

The Stairwell
from $26.95

This print comes from Santa Cruz, CA during the string of summer swells in 2026. I noticed the wave aligning with the stairwell while scouting a place to surf. At the time, nobody was surfing the wave, but I decided to head back to my van for the camera.

I waited for almost an hour in the stairwell for a surfer and wave to align.

Thankfully, I stuck out the wait as I love this image.

Start with the picture. A surfer rides a glassy green wave in the distance. Around the surfer, the frame is built from the walls of a concrete stairwell. A sunlit brick wall glows gold on the left, a shadowed wall fills the right, and a few blurred leaves soften the top corner. You look through a doorway to the ocean, and your eye lands right on the wave. It is the kind of image that rewards a second look, and a third.

I made the photograph in early summer 2026, during a stretch of strong south swells. I found the frame while I was revisiting some of my old spots on a Highway 1 road trip, and I had to run back to my van for my Sony and Tamron 70-180 G2. Then I stood in the stairwell for about an hour waiting for the tide to change and a surfer to drop in. I was shooting from 100 to 200 yards away, on land, and every bit of that patience is in the print.

I am keeping the exact spot vague, which is a habit among surf photographers, but the photograph is unmistakably Santa Cruz in spirit. It carries the cool blue of the Pacific, the warm light on old masonry, and the quiet focus of a place where people have been paddling out for generations. If you live in Santa Cruz or love visiting, it is the sort of print that feels like home.

Think about where it will hang. The print is horizontal, so it suits a wide wall above a couch, a console, a bed, or a desk. A larger size gives the wave real presence in a living room. A smaller size works beautifully in a hallway, a kitchen nook, or a bedroom. It comes in 8x10, 8x12, 11x14, 12x18, 16x24, 20x30, and 24x36, so you can choose to fit your space.

Then there is material. For this print I would lean toward metal. The green of the water and the gold of the brick look vibrant on metal, and metal is durable and resists UV light well. The tradeoffs are cost and glare, so hang it where the light will not bounce straight into your eyes. Paper is the least expensive, especially with a frame, and canvas has a softer look with little glare, though larger canvas costs more.

Beyond the home, this kind of print suits a surf shop corner, an office with a coastal feel, or a beach rental that wants real local character. It is also a thoughtful gift for a surfer or anyone who misses Santa Cruz.

The Stairwell is an open edition, and I try to sign each one, though I cannot always guarantee it. It is a human made photograph, not an AI image. If you want a custom size or a different material, you can ask for a free quote.
