Capturing Scale on an Overlanding Shoot Across Big Terrain

Some of the most vast, genuinely humbling landscapes I've driven through, on long road trips through open desert and high plains terrain with a Rivian, have produced disappointingly flat photographs when I didn't plan for scale deliberately. A vehicle that felt small and remarkable against an enormous landscape in person can read as just another car parked in some scenery if the photograph doesn't do the work of communicating just how big that terrain actually is.

Overlanding photography lives or dies on scale, and scale doesn't happen by accident in a frame. It has to be built deliberately through specific compositional choices. Why Scale Doesn't Show Up in a Photograph Automatically

The human eye and brain read scale in person using a combination of cues that a flat photograph simply doesn't have access to on its own: binocular depth perception, the way distant objects shift as we move our head, an intuitive sense of how big familiar things like rocks or trees actually are relative to the vast space around them. A camera captures none of that automatically.

This means a photograph of genuinely enormous terrain, without a deliberate scale reference included in the frame, often reads as visually pleasant but fails to communicate the actual, overwhelming size of the landscape the way the moment felt in person. I learned this the hard way on early overlanding trips, coming home with landscape shots that looked good but didn't capture what had actually been remarkable about being there.

Once I recognized this gap, I started treating scale as something to actively construct in every frame, rather than assuming the vastness of a landscape would simply come through on its own just because the terrain itself was impressive.

Using the Vehicle Itself as the Scale Reference

The most direct tool for establishing scale on an overlanding shoot is the vehicle itself, positioned deliberately small within a much larger frame. A vehicle that fills a third of the frame reads as the subject of a normal automotive photograph. The same vehicle occupying a tenth or twentieth of the frame, dwarfed by surrounding terrain, immediately communicates the true size of the landscape around it.

Getting this right requires physically positioning myself much further from the vehicle than instinct suggests, often using a longer lens to compress the distance between the vehicle and a distant landmark behind it, rather than shooting wide and close, which tends to exaggerate the vehicle's presence in the frame rather than diminishing it appropriately.

I coordinate specific vehicle placement with whoever's driving before setting up these shots, since the exact spot the vehicle stops matters enormously here. A vehicle parked in a slight depression or against a particularly large rock formation reads dramatically differently in terms of scale than the same vehicle parked on a flat, featureless stretch of the same general landscape.

Foreground, Middle Ground, and Background as a Deliberate System

Real depth and scale in a landscape photograph comes from clearly separated foreground, middle ground, and background elements that give the eye a sequence of reference points to judge relative distance and size against. A frame that's entirely middle-distance terrain, without anything genuinely close to the lens, tends to compress and flatten the actual scale of the scene.

I actively look for a strong foreground element, a rock formation, a stretch of textured ground, sometimes a person or the vehicle itself positioned closer to the lens, before setting up a wider scale shot. That foreground element gives the eye an anchor point of known size to measure everything else in the frame against.

The middle ground, often where the vehicle itself sits in an overlanding shot, then bridges between that close anchor and the distant background, creating a visual chain that the eye can follow across the full depth of the frame rather than jumping directly from something near to something impossibly far without any intermediate reference.

Including a Human Figure for an Immediate Scale Cue

Nothing communicates scale as instantly and intuitively as a human figure, since viewers have an automatic, built-in sense of roughly how large a person is. A small human figure positioned within an otherwise empty, vast landscape does more to communicate genuine scale than almost any other single compositional choice available.

On overlanding shoots, this often means having someone step out of the vehicle and stand at a specific, deliberately small position within the frame, sometimes near the vehicle itself, sometimes at a distance that further emphasizes the size gap between a person and the surrounding terrain. Even a distant figure, barely resolvable as a person, still registers as a scale cue to a viewer.

I coordinate this carefully with whoever's traveling with me, since standing still in a specific spot for a scale shot isn't always the most comfortable or obvious thing to do on a long travel day. Explaining exactly why the shot needs them in that specific spot, and how small they'll appear in the final frame, helps get genuine cooperation rather than a rushed, awkward pose.

Choosing Lenses and Focal Lengths Deliberately for Scale

Wide-angle lenses, often the default instinct for landscape photography, can actually work against scale communication in certain overlanding contexts, since they exaggerate the size of close foreground elements relative to the background, sometimes making distant terrain look smaller and less significant than it actually is.

For shots specifically built around communicating the size gap between a vehicle or figure and vast surrounding terrain, I often reach for a longer focal length than instinct suggests, since compression from a longer lens brings distant background elements visually closer to the subject, emphasizing just how much terrain exists between the foreground and the background without stretching that space apart the way a wide lens would.

This means my lens choice on an overlanding shoot varies deliberately based on exactly what I'm trying to communicate in a given frame: a wide lens for an immersive, in-the-landscape feeling shot from within the vehicle looking out, and a longer lens specifically for the scale-communicating shots of the vehicle small within its surroundings.

Elevation Changes and Vantage Points

Shooting from ground level, at the same elevation as the vehicle and terrain, often understates the true scale of a landscape compared to shooting from an elevated vantage point that shows more of the surrounding terrain stretching away in every direction. Getting above the scene, even by a modest amount, frequently reveals scale relationships that aren't visible from ground level at all.

On overlanding trips, I look specifically for natural elevated positions, a rise, a rock outcrop, sometimes a drone when conditions and regulations allow, that let me shoot down and across a landscape rather than only straight ahead from the same elevation as the subject. These elevated shots often become some of the strongest scale images from an entire trip.

I try to scout these vantage points ahead of time when route planning allows, rather than hoping to spot one spontaneously while traveling, since the best elevated positions for a specific stretch of terrain aren't always obvious from the road itself and can require a short detour or hike to actually reach.

Light and Weather That Reinforce the Feeling of Vastness

Certain lighting conditions do more to reinforce a genuine sense of scale than others. Long shadows from low-angle light, whether early morning or late afternoon, stretch across vast terrain in a way that emphasizes just how much ground that terrain actually covers, far more than the flatter, shorter shadows of midday light.

Weather that includes some atmospheric depth, distant haze, a storm system visible on the horizon, clouds that recede into the distance, also reinforces scale by giving the eye additional cues about how far away the background elements actually are. A perfectly clear, haze-free day, while visually pleasant, sometimes removes exactly the atmospheric depth cues that help a viewer judge real distance.

I plan overlanding scale shots around these specific lighting and weather windows when possible, rather than shooting scale-dependent frames in flat midday light purely because that's when the vehicle happened to be in the right spot. The extra planning to align vehicle position with the right light window has consistently produced stronger scale images than opportunistic shooting.

Editing Choices That Preserve or Undercut Scale

Post-production choices can either reinforce or quietly undercut the scale established in the original frame. Aggressive dehazing or contrast boosts that remove atmospheric depth can flatten a scene that originally had genuine layered distance cues, even though the change might look like an improvement in isolation.

I edit scale-focused images with a specific eye toward preserving the depth cues that made the scale work in the first place, sometimes leaving in a degree of atmospheric haze or softness in distant elements that a more aggressive edit would remove entirely in pursuit of maximum clarity throughout the frame.

Cropping decisions matter here too. A tighter crop that brings the vehicle or figure larger in the frame, even slightly, can meaningfully undercut the scale relationship that was carefully composed in camera. I try to protect the original framing decisions through the edit rather than adjusting crop reactively without considering what that does to the scale relationship established on location.

What I've Learned About Communicating Scale Honestly

There's a temptation, in pursuit of a more dramatic scale image, to exaggerate the relationship between subject and landscape beyond what was actually there in person, through extreme lens choices or aggressive editing. I've found that scale images land more powerfully with viewers when they represent an honest, if carefully composed, version of the actual size relationship rather than an artificially exaggerated one.

The best scale shots I've captured on overlanding trips haven't required distorting reality, just deliberately composing around the genuine, already-remarkable size difference between a vehicle or person and vast open terrain. That distinction between honest composition and artificial exaggeration matters both for the integrity of the work and for how believable the final image feels to a viewer.

Scale, done well, doesn't need embellishment. The actual landscapes overlanding trips move through are already big enough to carry the image on their own, once the composition gives the viewer the reference points needed to actually perceive that size.

Planning Scale Shots Into the Actual Route, Not as an Afterthought

Because a strong scale shot depends on the right combination of vehicle position, elevation, light, and a clean foreground, I've learned not to leave these shots to spontaneous opportunity while driving. I now identify likely scale-shot locations during route planning itself, using maps and prior trip notes to flag stretches where the terrain naturally supports this kind of composition.

This means building extra time into the day's driving schedule specifically around these planned locations, arriving with enough daylight left to actually set up the shot properly rather than passing through at the wrong time of day purely because the overall route didn't account for it. A beautiful scale opportunity discovered with no time to actually shoot it well is effectively a missed opportunity.

I also communicate this planning with whoever's traveling with me well before we reach a flagged location, so the stop doesn't feel like a sudden, disruptive interruption to the day's driving. Framing it as a planned part of the itinerary, rather than an impromptu request, makes the whole group far more willing to spend the extra time a good scale shot actually requires.

Communicating Scale to Clients Who Want to See the Vehicle Clearly

Scale photography creates a real tension with clients who want their vehicle shown large and clearly in frame, since the very technique that communicates genuine scale requires making the vehicle appear small. Navigating this conversation honestly, rather than defaulting entirely to one approach or the other, has become a regular part of briefing an overlanding client.

I typically propose a mixed set: some frames where the vehicle is the clear, detailed subject for product-focused needs, and other frames specifically built around scale, where the vehicle's smallness within vast terrain is the entire point. Showing clients examples of both approaches side by side, rather than describing the difference abstractly, makes this tradeoff much easier for them to understand and approve.

Once clients see a genuinely successful scale image, one that communicates the vastness of a landscape their vehicle actually traveled through, most come around to wanting at least a few of these in the final set, since they capture something a close, detailed product shot never can: the actual scope of the journey itself.

Drone Perspectives as a Distinct Scale Tool

A drone offers a genuinely different scale-communicating perspective than anything achievable from the ground, since it can reveal how a vehicle relates to terrain features, a canyon system, a dry lakebed, a distant mountain range, that simply aren't visible from a ground-level vantage point regardless of how far back I position myself.

I use drone shots specifically for scale relationships that the surrounding terrain makes impossible to capture from the ground, an overhead view showing a vehicle as a tiny mark against a vast salt flat, or a wide aerial pull-back that reveals how much open terrain surrounds a single dirt track. These shots complement, rather than replace, the ground-level scale compositions built around foreground and vehicle placement.

Regulations, permits, and noise considerations around drone use vary significantly by location, and I always confirm what's actually permitted well before a trip rather than assuming a drone will be a viable option everywhere the route passes through, and I always have a solid ground-based backup plan ready in case conditions or regulations rule it out on a given day, so a lost aerial opportunity never means a lost shoot entirely, just a shift back to the ground-level techniques that carry most of this work regardless.
