Filters I Never Travel Without, and Why

Filters are one of those categories of gear that can expand almost indefinitely if you let them, a specialty filter for every possible lighting condition, a graduated option for every horizon type, a color-correction filter for every environment. Over enough international trips, where every gram in the bag has a real cost, I've narrowed this down to a short, deliberate list of filters that actually earn their place, and left the rest behind.

What made the cut isn't the most exotic or specialized gear, it's the pieces that solve real, recurring problems across a wide range of adventure conditions. The Filters That Made the Final Cut of My Bag

After years of trimming and testing, the filter kit that actually travels with me on nearly every trip has narrowed down to a circular polarizer and a neutral density filter, usually in a couple of strengths. That's a much shorter list than the filter aisle of any camera store would suggest is necessary, and that's exactly the point. Most of what a filter aisle sells solves a problem that shows up rarely enough not to justify the weight and complexity of carrying it.

This short list isn't a claim that other filters are never useful, specialty color-correction filters and dedicated night-sky filters have their place for photographers working in specific, narrow niches. For the range of adventure conditions I actually shoot across seven continents, though, the polarizer and ND cover the overwhelming majority of situations where a filter meaningfully improves the shot over what's achievable with exposure and editing alone.

Keeping the list short also means I actually know these two tools intimately, in a way that would be harder if attention were split across a dozen specialty options used only occasionally. Depth of familiarity with a small kit has served me better than shallow familiarity with a large one.

The Polarizer and What It Actually Solves

A circular polarizer solves a specific set of problems that no amount of editing can replicate convincingly afterward: cutting glare off wet rock, foliage, and water surfaces, deepening a blue sky in a way that reads as natural rather than an obvious editing push, and cutting through surface reflection on water to reveal what's actually beneath it. All three of these effects depend on the physical property of polarized light, which is why they can't be faked in post with the same believable result.

The polarizer earns its permanent spot in the bag specifically because these situations, wet rock on a climbing or waterfall shoot, glare off a lake or ocean surface, a sky that needs more depth and contrast, come up constantly across almost every adventure category I shoot, hiking, climbing, paddling, van life and overlanding scenes with big open sky.

The trade-off with a polarizer is a light loss of roughly a stop or two depending on the specific filter, along with an uneven effect across very wide-angle shots where the sky's polarization can look inconsistent from one side of the frame to the other. Both are manageable trade-offs I've learned to anticipate and work around rather than reasons to leave the filter behind.

Neutral Density and When It's Worth the Time

Neutral density filters solve a different problem: they let me use a slower shutter speed or wider aperture than the ambient light would otherwise allow, which matters most for two specific effects, smoothing moving water into a soft blur, and controlling depth of field in bright daylight when a wide aperture would otherwise force an impossibly fast shutter speed.

I carry ND filters in a couple of different strengths rather than a single one, since the right strength depends heavily on the specific effect and lighting condition, a lighter ND for a moderate water-blur effect in overcast light, a stronger one for the same effect in full midday sun, or for long-exposure work where the shutter needs to stay open for a meaningful stretch of time.

ND filters take real setup time to use well, composing the frame, focusing, and locking exposure before adding the filter and adjusting for the light loss, which means they're a deliberate, planned-shot tool rather than something reached for on a fast-moving, opportunistic shoot. Knowing when a shot justifies that setup time versus when it doesn't is as much a part of using ND filters well as the technical exposure math itself.

What I Don't Carry Anymore

Graduated neutral density filters, once a staple of my kit for balancing a bright sky against a darker foreground, have mostly been replaced by exposure bracketing and editing, since modern sensor dynamic range and blending techniques now handle that specific problem nearly as well without requiring a physical filter and its associated setup time. This is one of the clearer examples of gear that made sense years ago and doesn't anymore, given how the surrounding technology has shifted.

Specialty color-correction filters, warming or cooling filters designed to shift the overall color temperature of a scene, have also been cut, since that adjustment is trivial and fully reversible in editing, unlike the polarizer and ND effects that depend on the physical behavior of light itself. There's no reason to carry extra glass and weight for an effect that a slider in editing software replicates just as well.

UV filters, once nearly universal as a default lens-protection measure, don't make my kit either. I've found the protective benefit marginal against real adventure-photography risks, an actual impact or drop, while the image-quality cost, an extra piece of glass in front of every shot, isn't worth paying for protection that a proper lens cap and careful handling mostly cover anyway.

Protecting Glass in Harsh Conditions

Filters themselves need protection in the field, and I've learned this mostly through losing or damaging a few early in my career. Salt spray on a coastal or surf shoot dries into a residue on a filter's surface that's genuinely difficult to clean without proper lens tissue and cleaning solution on hand, which is a small but real addition to the field kit specifically for filter maintenance.

Dust and sand in desert environments pose a similar problem, working into the threading of a screw-on filter in a way that can make it difficult to remove cleanly, sometimes requiring real force that risks damaging the filter or the lens threading itself if not handled carefully. I've learned to check and clean filter threading regularly on dusty trips rather than waiting until removal becomes a genuine struggle.

Cold weather introduces its own filter-specific problem, condensation forming on a filter surface when moving between a cold exterior and a warmer interior space, a van or a lodge, which can fog a shot entirely if not managed. Letting gear acclimate gradually inside a sealed bag before exposing it to a temperature change has become a standard habit specifically to protect against this.

The Filter Mistake I See Most Often

The most common filter mistake I see, in my own early work and in photographers I've mentored since, is reaching for a filter as a fix for a problem that better composition or timing would have solved more effectively. A polarizer can deepen a sky, but it can't rescue a fundamentally uninteresting composition. An ND filter can smooth moving water, but it can't compensate for a shot that wasn't well-framed in the first place.

This mistake usually comes from treating filters as a shortcut to a better photo rather than as a tool that enhances an already strong composition. The better sequence is almost always composition and timing first, filter second, using the filter to refine an already-good frame rather than to paper over a weaker one.

The other version of this mistake is over-reliance on a heavy polarizer effect specifically, cranking the polarization to maximum on every shot regardless of whether the scene calls for it, which produces an unnaturally dark, over-saturated sky that reads as an obvious filter effect rather than a natural enhancement. A lighter touch, adjusted to the specific scene, almost always looks more convincing than the maximum setting used indiscriminately.

Weight and Kit Decisions on International Trips

On international trips specifically, where every gram of carry-on weight competes with camera bodies, lenses, and batteries, the filter kit gets scrutinized hardest. A polarizer for each of the two or three lenses I'm bringing, plus a small ND set, adds up to a manageable but real weight and bulk allocation, one I protect specifically because of how much these two filter types actually get used relative to anything else in the bag.

Filter size compatibility across lenses is a detail worth planning before a trip rather than discovering in the field. Standardizing on a common filter thread size across as many lenses as possible, using step-up rings where sizes differ, means fewer duplicate filters need to be carried, which meaningfully reduces both weight and the number of small, easy-to-lose items in the kit.

This kind of upfront planning is a small example of a broader packing discipline that matters a lot on international shoots: every item in the bag has to justify its weight against how often it actually gets used, and the polarizer and ND filters have consistently justified theirs across enough trips that I no longer even question including them.

How Filters Fit Into an Editing Workflow

Even with physical filters in the field, editing still plays a role in the final look, and understanding where the filter's job ends and editing's job begins keeps the workflow efficient rather than redundant. A polarizer's glare reduction and sky deepening are baked into the file at capture, meaningfully reducing how much editing work is needed to achieve a similar look, but a final color grade and contrast pass still happens afterward regardless.

For ND-filtered long exposures specifically, editing work often focuses on cleaning up any color cast the filter introduces, since even good-quality ND filters can shift color balance slightly, a correction that's straightforward with a known reference but worth planning for rather than being surprised by during the edit.

The general principle that's held up across years of this workflow is that filters and editing aren't competing solutions to the same problem, they're sequential steps that each do what they're actually good at, physical filters handling effects tied to the real behavior of light, and editing handling everything else that's more efficiently adjusted after the fact.

When a Filter Can't Save a Shot

There are conditions where no filter in the bag is going to meaningfully help, and recognizing those moments quickly avoids wasting time trying. Extremely flat, overcast light with no directional quality to it isn't improved by a polarizer, since there's minimal glare or sky saturation to work with in the first place. A scene with genuinely poor composition or a distracting background isn't rescued by any exposure adjustment a filter can provide.

In these situations, the better use of time is adjusting position, waiting for better light, or accepting the conditions and shooting for a different kind of image, a mood or documentary shot rather than a dramatic landscape frame, rather than reaching for a filter that isn't going to solve the actual problem in front of the lens.

Learning to recognize this quickly, rather than fumbling with filter adjustments hoping one of them will help, comes from enough field experience seeing which conditions respond to filters and which genuinely don't. It's a small discipline, but it saves real time on shoot days where time is often the scarcest resource available.

What I'd Tell a Photographer Building a Filter Kit From Scratch

Start with a good circular polarizer sized to your most-used lens, and use it deliberately for a while before adding anything else, since it's the single filter most likely to earn a permanent place in almost any outdoor photography kit. Resist the urge to buy a full filter system with every graduated and specialty option available before you've actually identified which specific problems keep showing up in your own work.

Add a neutral density filter once you have a specific, recurring use case in mind, moving water, long exposure work, rather than buying one speculatively because it seems like professional gear should include it. A filter that sits unused in a bag is dead weight regardless of how capable it is, and identifying real, recurring need before buying keeps a filter kit lean and genuinely useful.

Beyond those two, be skeptical of any filter marketed as solving a problem that editing software already handles well and reversibly. The filters worth carrying are the ones doing something with the physical behavior of light itself that no amount of post-processing convincingly replicates, and that's a shorter list than the filter aisle would have you believe.

How I Store Filters So They Survive Transit

Filters travel in a dedicated hard case within the bag, separated from lenses and bodies, since loose filters rattling against other gear in a general pouch are one of the more common ways a coating gets scratched before it's ever actually used in the field. This case adds a small amount of extra bulk, but it's cheap insurance against damaging a piece of glass that's otherwise fairly resilient once it's actually mounted and in use.

I also keep a simple written inventory of which filters are in the case before every international trip specifically, since it's easy to assume a filter made it into the bag when in fact it was left behind after cleaning or after being used on a different lens the week before. This small habit has saved more than one trip from arriving at a remote location only to discover a key filter simply wasn't packed.

A microfiber cloth and a small blower live in the same case, since a dusty or smudged filter defeats the purpose of carrying good glass in the first place. Cleaning it in the field, before it goes back in the case, takes seconds and avoids grinding grit into the coating the next time it's mounted.
