Gear I Brought on a 5-Day Kayak Photography Road Trip
Every piece of gear that comes on a five-day road trip production has to earn its place. Weight, volume, and setup time are production costs on a moving production and anything that does not contribute directly to the deliverables is a burden on the crew and a drain on the time available for actual content capture. The gear list for the Oru Kayak Lake campaign was the result of deliberate decisions about what was essential and what was not.

The Primary Camera System
The Sony a7R IV was the primary stills camera for the Oru Kayak campaign. The resolution advantage of a high megapixel sensor is specifically valuable in kayak campaign photography because it allows significant crop flexibility in post-production for the boat-to-boat and water-level images where working distance constraints limit focal length options. When you are swimming next to a kayak with a wide-angle lens, the ability to crop a high-resolution capture to a tighter composition without sacrificing usable resolution gives significantly more editorial options than a lower resolution sensor at the same field of view would provide.
The Sony a7S III served as the primary video and low-light camera. The combination of exceptional high-ISO performance and the video-optimized sensor characteristics made it the right choice for the early morning and late evening production windows where the most compelling light for water photography coincided with the lowest light levels of the production day. The two-camera-system approach meant that switching between stills and video production modes did not require changing camera bodies and losing time to re-configuration. Each camera stayed in its primary mode throughout the production day and the photographer switched between them as the production rhythm required.
The Tamron lens lineup provided the focal length range for both cameras. Wide-angle coverage for the boat-to-boat and over-under work. Standard focal lengths for environmental character shots. Longer focal lengths for the shore-based telephoto compression work that showed the relationship between the kayakers and the Eastern Sierra landscape. The Tamron lenses' weather sealing was not the primary reason for their selection but the additional protection against splash and spray that weather sealing provides in water environments is a practical advantage that any lens system used near water should have.
The Water Housing System
The water housing was the piece of gear that most distinguished the Oru Kayak campaign visually from conventional kayak photography and it was the piece that required the most setup time and the most operational care throughout the production. The housing enclosed the primary stills camera with a dome port for wide-angle over-under work and a flat port configuration available for longer focal length water-level work. The dome port was the more frequently used configuration because the over-under split and the at-surface wide-angle perspectives were primary visual goals throughout the production.
O-ring maintenance was performed before every production session that involved submersion. Housing inspection after every submersion verified that no moisture had entered the housing interior. The maintenance protocol added approximately fifteen minutes to the daily production preparation but it also meant that the housing never failed during the five-day production despite extensive use in cold mountain water conditions. Equipment failure prevention through consistent maintenance is not exciting but it is the kind of professional discipline that makes long location productions reliable rather than anxiety-producing.
The water housing case was configured for fast access during production rather than maximum protection during transport. The housing was assembled and the port was mounted before leaving camp each morning so that when the production arrived at a location the housing was ready to enter the water immediately rather than requiring assembly time that would consume part of the golden hour production window. That pre-configuration discipline applied to every piece of gear on the production: everything was ready to use before arrival at the location rather than assembled on-site.
The DJI Drone System
The drone brought on the Oru Kayak campaign was selected for its combination of camera quality, flight time, and portability in a road trip production context. The production was moving between five locations across five days and the drone needed to fit in a case that could be transported and deployed quickly at each location without requiring a dedicated vehicle or a separate operator for the drone case.
The drone provided the aerial perspective that no ground-based camera position could produce: the overhead look at the kayaks on the water surrounded by the color of the lake or river surface, the aerial revealing shot that showed the scale of the Eastern Sierra landscape around each location, and the tracking shot that followed the kayaks across the water from above in a way that communicated movement and direction with a quality that ground-based video cannot replicate. Each of those aerial contributions served specific narrative purposes in the campaign library and none of them was available without the drone.
Drone operation in mountain locations at elevation introduced operational considerations that are less relevant at lower altitudes. Battery performance degrades at altitude and the flight times achievable at sea level are not achievable in the Eastern Sierra locations on the Oru Kayak campaign. Managing battery rotation to maintain continuous coverage during golden hour windows required more batteries than a lower-altitude production would have needed. That altitude-specific battery management is one of the location-specific production details that only becomes apparent through experience with drone operation in mountain environments.
The DJI Gimbal System
The DJI gimbal used as a second shooter on the Oru Kayak campaign was one of the highest-leverage pieces of gear on the production relative to its setup complexity. Positioned and left to run on a specific angle while the primary camera worked other angles simultaneously, the gimbal multiplied the coverage available from each setup without requiring an additional operator. The smooth motion footage it produced required no additional attention once positioned and provided a distinct visual style complementary to the handheld and water housing footage captured simultaneously.
The gimbal's most effective use on the production was in setups where the primary camera work required the photographer's full attention in a position where the gimbal could work a different angle independently. The swimming with housing setups were the primary example: while the photographer was in the water capturing at-surface and over-under frames, the gimbal on the shore or on the support vessel was simultaneously capturing smooth motion footage of the same scene from a different angle. The two pieces of coverage from a single setup window gave the editor significantly more material to work with than either piece alone would have provided.
Pre-configuration of the gimbal before arriving at each location followed the same discipline applied to every other piece of gear on the production. Leveled and balanced in the van during the drive between locations rather than assembled on-site, the gimbal was ready to position immediately on arrival and contribute to the golden hour production window from its first minute at the location. That pre-configuration discipline applied across the entire gear system was one of the production decisions that most directly contributed to the volume of usable content the five-day production generated.
The Mobile Phone for UGC
Including phones specifically for UGC capture on a professional production is a decision that surprises photographers who have not worked in the integrated campaign model. The phones were not a budget substitute for professional camera equipment. They were the right tool for a specific category of deliverable where the phone aesthetic was not a limitation but a feature.
The UGC captured on phones throughout the Oru Kayak production was intentionally different in visual quality from the professional camera footage. The slight grain, the automatic color processing, the slightly compressed dynamic range, all of those characteristics that make phone footage look like phone footage were exactly right for content intended to communicate authentic personal documentation of a real experience. Capturing that same content on a professional camera would have made it look like produced content rather than personal documentation and eliminated the authenticity signal that made the UGC valuable for the distribution contexts where it was deployed.
The phones also served as backup documentation devices throughout the production. Location scout notes, gear configuration references, talent direction notes, and visual references for post-production were all captured on phones as production management tools rather than content capture tools. That documentation use is separate from the intentional UGC capture but it is part of the practical value that phones bring to a location production beyond their role in the content deliverable package.
The Backup and Storage System
Five days of multi-format production generates an enormous amount of raw data and the backup system for that data is as important to the success of the production as any camera or lens decision. The backup system on the Oru Kayak campaign used two physically separate drives for every card backup, with the backup performed every evening before any data was considered secure. Neither drive was carried in the same bag or vehicle as the other to protect against the scenario where a theft or vehicle incident would eliminate both copies simultaneously.
Card management during production followed a clear protocol: full cards went immediately into a designated case rather than being reformatted in the field, and the case was not opened until the full backup had been completed and verified at the end of the day. That protocol protected against the accidental reformatting of an unread card that has cost photographers irreplaceable footage in past productions. The few minutes of organizational discipline required to maintain the protocol is the investment that prevents a catastrophic content loss from happening during a production that cannot be reshot.
The Gear That Did Not Make the List
The gear that was considered and left behind is as informative as the gear that came. Several pieces of equipment that might seem natural inclusions for a water-based outdoor campaign production were evaluated and excluded because their weight, volume, or setup time cost would have exceeded their production value contribution on a road trip production moving between five locations across five days.
A lighting kit was the most significant exclusion. Natural light in the Eastern Sierra during golden hour windows is so superior to any portable lighting solution available for an outdoor production of this scale that artificial lighting would have added weight and setup time without contributing meaningfully to the visual quality of the images. The golden hour light is the lighting. The production approach is to be in position when it arrives rather than to try to replicate its quality with equipment that falls well short of the original.
A support vessel for the water work was also evaluated and excluded. A motorized support vessel would have allowed the water housing work to be conducted from a stable platform rather than from a swimmer's position. But the motorized vessel would have introduced engine noise that would have affected the audio for the video capture, would have limited access to shallow-water locations where the most interesting light and composition situations existed, and would have added logistical complexity to a production that was intentionally designed for maximum mobility and minimum setup overhead. Swimming with the housing was more physically demanding and produced better creative results than a vessel-mounted housing approach would have provided for the specific production requirements of this campaign.
