Why Weather in the Field Rarely Gives You Warning
Mountain and coastal weather systems move fast, and by the time you can see a storm coming, you often only have minutes rather than hours to respond. Terrain amplifies this: a ridge line or a canyon can hide an incoming system until it's almost on top of you, even on a day that started under a clear sky and a favorable forecast.
Water adds its own unpredictability. Wind can pick up over open water far faster than it does on land, turning a calm paddle into a genuinely challenging situation in a short span of time. Spray alone, without a drop of rain falling, is enough to compromise gear that isn't properly protected.
None of this means forecasts are useless. It means I treat them as a rough guide rather than a guarantee, and I pack and prepare for a wider range of conditions than the forecast technically calls for. That habit has saved more gear, and more shoot days, than any single piece of equipment I own.
The Baseline Protection I Never Skip
Weather sealing on a camera body and lens used to be a real differentiator between budget and professional gear. At this point, it's closer to table stakes across most of the market, which means I don't treat a sealed body as full protection on its own. It buys time in a sudden downpour. It doesn't make a camera waterproof.
Regardless of how well-sealed my gear is, a rain cover or dry bag goes into my pack on every single outing, even ones where the forecast looks completely clean. The rule I hold myself to is simple: if there's any chance I'm near water or elevation where weather can shift fast, the cover comes along, whether I expect to need it or not.
I also keep a basic cleaning kit with me at all times, since moisture exposure often isn't a single dramatic event but a slow accumulation of condensation, spray, or humidity over the course of a day. Catching that early, before it becomes a real problem, is a large part of what keeps gear functioning through a full trip.
What's Always in My Bag for Sudden Weather
A packable rain cover sized for whichever body and lens combination I'm using that day is non-negotiable. I'd rather carry one I don't need than be caught without one when a system rolls in faster than expected, and a good cover packs down small enough that there's really no excuse to leave it behind.
Silica packets and dehydrated rice travel with my gear on essentially every water-adjacent shoot. Moisture damage is the most consistent risk across water-based work, and packing desiccant alongside cameras and lenses helps pull ambient moisture out of a bag before it has a chance to reach sensitive electronics.
A few microfiber cloths, a dry bag large enough for a full body-and-lens combination, and a headlamp round out the core kit. That last one has mattered more than it sounds like it should: on at least one summit approach where the forecast turned overcast and rainy without warning, I hadn't packed a flash, and a headlamp ended up doing the job as an improvised light source.
How I Read Conditions Before They Turn
Cloud behavior tells you more than a forecast app usually will in the moment. Fast-moving cloud layers, a sudden drop in temperature, or a shift in wind direction are all signals I've learned to watch for, especially in mountain terrain where local weather can diverge sharply from the regional forecast.
On water, the tell is usually wind and surface texture before it's rain. A flat surface that starts developing chop, or a breeze that shifts from steady to gusty, is often the first real warning that conditions are about to change, well before any clouds show up on the horizon.
I've learned to trust these physical signals over an app on my phone, mostly because local terrain effects are exactly the kind of thing a broad regional forecast can't capture. Paying attention to what's actually happening around me, rather than what a screen says should be happening, has given me more useful lead time than any forecast ever has.
The First 60 Seconds When Weather Turns
When conditions shift fast, the first move is always protection over the shot. Getting the rain cover on, or getting the body into a dry bag, comes before trying to squeeze out one more frame. It's tempting to chase the dramatic light that often comes right before a storm, but that instinct has to be balanced against the very real cost of a flooded camera.
I try to have my protective gear positioned for fast access rather than buried at the bottom of a pack. A rain cover that takes two minutes to dig out is a rain cover that doesn't do its job when a squall moves in over open water in under a minute. Accessibility matters as much as the gear itself.
If I genuinely can't get protection on in time, I prioritize getting the gear pointed away from direct exposure, angled down or shielded by my own body, rather than leaving it exposed while I fumble for a cover. A few seconds of imperfect protection beats several seconds of no protection at all.
Protecting Gear From Moisture Specifically
Rain is the obvious threat, but humidity and condensation cause just as much long-term damage, especially when gear moves quickly between temperature extremes, like coming down from a cold summit into a warm van or vehicle. That temperature swing causes condensation to form inside a bag, sometimes without a single drop of actual rain involved.
I let gear acclimate gradually when possible, keeping it sealed in a bag for a stretch of time after a big temperature change rather than opening everything up immediately. That gives internal moisture a chance to equalize slowly rather than condensing directly onto sensor and lens elements.
On any shoot involving water directly, whether that's kayaking, SUP, canoeing, or surf work, I treat every piece of gear as though it will eventually get wet, even the pieces rated for water resistance. Housings and seals fail, fasteners loosen, and the difference between a minor scare and a flooded body often comes down to whether I noticed the failure in time.
What I Do When I Don't Have the Right Gear for the Conditions
Sometimes the weather shifts into something my kit genuinely wasn't packed for, and in those moments the priority becomes improvisation over abandoning the shot entirely. A jacket becomes an improvised rain cover. A dry bag meant for one piece of gear gets shared between two smaller items. The goal shifts from ideal protection to acceptable protection.
The headlamp-as-lighting story is the clearest example from my own experience: no flash packed, weather turned against the forecast, and the only available light source was headlamps carried for the hike itself. For anyone doing regular field work in unpredictable conditions, I'd treat insurance as close to mandatory rather than optional. The cost of a single replacement body or lens, especially specialized gear, almost always dwarfs years of premium payments, and the peace of mind changes how willing I am to push into conditions that produce genuinely strong images.
Drying Out and Assessing Gear After the Fact
After any real weather exposure, gear gets a full check before it goes back into regular rotation. That means opening battery and card compartments to air out, wiping down external seals and buttons, and watching for any sluggish response on dials or switches that might indicate moisture got further in than expected.
I avoid the instinct to immediately power everything back on and check if it still works. Giving gear time to fully dry, sometimes overnight, reduces the risk of a short if moisture did make it past the exterior seals. Rushing that check has caused more damage, in my experience, than the original weather exposure did.
If anything seems off after a weather event, even something minor, I get it looked at rather than assuming it'll resolve itself. A small issue caught early is a cheap fix. The same issue ignored for a few more shoots can turn into a full replacement, and that gap in cost is almost never worth the gamble.
Mistakes I've Made With Weather Protection
Early on, I underestimated how often "probably fine" weather actually turns. I skipped packing a rain cover on trips where the forecast looked clean, reasoning that the extra weight wasn't worth it for a low-probability event. More than once, that decision cost me either a compromised shoot or gear that needed repair afterward.

Clients generally respond well to this kind of transparency, the same way they do with pricing. Nobody wants a surprised photographer explaining after the fact why a deliverable is late. A brief, honest conversation about weather risk before the trip starts almost always heads off a bigger problem later.
Packing Differently for Mountain, Water, and Coastal Trips
Weather protection isn't identical across every kind of trip, and I've learned to adjust my kit specifically rather than carrying one generic weather setup everywhere. Mountain and alpine trips push me toward lighter, more packable rain protection and extra insulation layers for gear, since temperature swings matter as much as precipitation at elevation.
Water-based trips, kayaking, SUP, canoeing, surf work, shift the priority toward dedicated dry bags and housings rather than a simple rain cover, since the exposure risk is constant rather than occasional. Desiccant packets go into every water bag by default on these trips, not just the ones where rain is specifically in the forecast.
Coastal and van-based road trips carry their own version of this problem: salt air and humidity accumulate steadily rather than arriving as a single dramatic event. I wipe down gear more frequently on these trips and pay closer attention to slow corrosion on metal components, which is easy to overlook compared to a single obvious rain event.
Building these small adjustments into my packing routine for each specific type of trip has done more for gear longevity than any single piece of equipment. A generic "weather kit" applied identically to every environment misses the specific failure mode each one actually produces.
Traveling internationally adds one more layer to this planning, since replacing a damaged rain cover or a lost desiccant supply isn't as simple as a quick errand once you're far from familiar suppliers. I over-pack slightly on these trips specifically, carrying spares of the smaller protective items that would otherwise be an easy, cheap fix at home but a genuine logistical headache abroad.
