My best friend Michael Whalen and I spent five days on Lake Tahoe's surface, and here's what its depth and temperature actually mean for anyone planning a similar multi-day paddleboard trip.
How Deep Lake Tahoe Actually Is
Lake Tahoe reaches roughly 1,645 feet at its deepest point, making it one of the deepest lakes in the United States. That depth is part of what gives the water its distinctive, almost impossibly saturated blue color, since light behaves differently in water this deep and this clear compared to shallower lakes closer to shore.

Despite warm summer air temperatures around the lake, Lake Tahoe's water stays cold even during peak summer, a direct result of its depth and the way that much water resists rapid temperature change compared to shallower bodies of water. We paddled during a summer window with comfortable water temperatures for extended exposure, but the lake never felt genuinely warm the way a shallow, sun-heated pond might.
