How to Swim and Shoot at the Same Time

Swimming with a camera housing is not comfortable. The housing adds significant buoyancy and drag. The water is usually cold. The physical demands of swimming while simultaneously positioning a camera and evaluating an image are genuinely challenging. And when it works, it produces images that could not have been taken from anywhere except inside the water with the subject.

On the Oru Kayak Lake campaign, getting in the water with the housing was one of the defining production decisions. The underwater perspectives, the at-surface intimacy, and the boat-to-boat proximity that came from swimming rather than shooting from a vessel were central to what made the campaign feel different from conventional kayak photography. The Physical Preparation Required

Swimming with a water housing requires a different physical preparation than regular swimming because the housing changes the physical dynamics of being in the water in significant ways. The housing is buoyant, which means it wants to float rather than submerge and controlling its position in the water requires active physical effort rather than the neutral buoyancy that an unencumbered swimmer has. The drag produced by the housing's volume slows swimming speed and increases the physical effort required to maintain position in any kind of current.

Developing the physical conditioning for effective in-water camera work requires practice in the water with the housing before any production use. This means getting in the water with the actual housing and the actual lens configuration that will be used on the production and spending time learning how the specific combination of housing, port, and camera body behaves in the water. Different housing configurations behave very differently in the water depending on their size, the port configuration, and the relative buoyancy of the camera body. Knowing how your specific setup behaves before you need it in a production context is essential to using it effectively when it counts.

Wetsuit or drysuit selection matters significantly for the duration and effectiveness of in-water camera work. Cold water significantly reduces the time before physical performance degrades and camera work requires the kind of fine motor control that is among the first capabilities lost to cold. Appropriate thermal protection for the water temperature is not optional comfort equipment. It is a production necessity that determines how long effective in-water work is possible before the body's response to cold begins affecting the quality of the images.

Entry and Positioning Techniques

Entering the water with a housing requires a different approach than entering the water without one. The priority is keeping the housing dry until the O-ring seals have been verified and the housing is prepared for submersion. That means entering the water from a stable position and controlling the housing to keep it above the surface during entry rather than allowing it to splash in with the natural entry motion of a swimmer.

Once in the water, the initial positioning challenge is establishing a stable relationship between the body and the housing that allows controlled movement without the housing bobbing unpredictably in the water surface chop. The housing wants to be on the surface. Getting it to a specific position at or below the surface requires physical effort that has to be sustained for the duration of the shot. The most effective technique for over-under split work is to position the housing at the waterline and use the body's buoyancy as a counterweight to hold it there while minor paddle movements with the free hand adjust position relative to the subject.

For fully submerged work, the approach is different. The housing needs to be weighted against its natural buoyancy to hold a position below the surface and that weighting can be achieved through the body's physical pressure on the housing, through additional weight attached to the housing if the specific production allows for it, or through a diving approach where the swimmer actively descends with the housing to a specific depth and captures the image during a brief period of controlled depth before returning to the surface. Each of those approaches produces different visual results and each has physical demands that require practice to execute safely and effectively.

Breath Control and Timing

For any in-water camera work that involves submerging the face to evaluate the image through the viewfinder or live view screen, breath control is a practical production skill. The photographer needs to submerge, evaluate the composition, adjust if necessary, time the capture to coincide with the right moment in the subject's movement, and surface again. That sequence takes longer than most photographers anticipate before they have practiced it and the physical stress of doing it in cold water with a housing to manage makes the breath hold duration shorter than it would be under comfortable conditions.

The practical solution is to use the housing's external monitor or live view capability rather than the viewfinder for underwater composition. This allows the photographer to keep their face above the surface while positioning the housing below it, evaluating the composition on the external screen rather than through the viewfinder. The physical demands are different but the breath control requirement is eliminated, which significantly extends the duration of effective in-water work and reduces the physical stress of capturing sequences rather than individual frames.

On the Oru Kayak campaign, the approach varied by setup. For over-under splits, the external monitor allowed surface-level evaluation of underwater compositions without submerging the face. For fully underwater work, the viewfinder was used with breath holds timed to the production rhythm rather than extended to the point of physical strain. Knowing which approach to use for which type of in-water work is part of the technique vocabulary that develops through practice in safe conditions before production use.

Safety Protocols for In-Water Camera Work

In-water camera work in outdoor production environments involves real physical risks that require honest assessment before every production session. Water temperature, current strength, depth, the presence of other watercraft, and the physical condition of the photographer all affect the safety parameters of in-water work in ways that need to be evaluated before entering the water rather than managed after the fact.

The minimum safety protocol for in-water camera work in a production context is a designated water safety monitor who is not simultaneously trying to capture content. This person watches the in-water photographer, is prepared to provide immediate assistance if the photographer gets into difficulty, and has access to a rescue flotation device appropriate for the conditions. In conditions with any significant current, this monitor is in a position to assist without entering the current themselves. In cold water conditions, they are monitoring for signs of cold incapacitation and prepared to call the session before the photographer's judgment is affected.

The willingness to call a session before the planned end time because conditions have deteriorated or the photographer's physical state has changed is a safety skill as important as any technical camera skill. Cold water incapacitation happens faster than most people expect and the degradation of judgment that precedes physical incapacitation is not always visible to the person experiencing it. Building in a conservative exit protocol that prioritizes safety over content capture is the professional standard for in-water production work regardless of the production pressure to continue shooting.

What In-Water Work Produces That Nothing Else Can

The images that come from in-water work in outdoor water sports photography are different in specific ways from every other camera position available. The at-surface perspective shows the water world from inside it rather than from above it. The viewer is not observing the experience from a safe dry position. They are visually placed in the same physical context as the subject, with the water around them and the sky above them and the subject moving through the same environment they occupy.

That positional quality produces aspiration of a different kind than shore-based photography produces. Shore-based photography of a beautiful kayaking location says look at this place and this experience. In-water photography says this is what it feels like to be in that place having that experience. The second message is significantly more powerful for a product whose entire value proposition is the experience it enables. The Oru Kayak campaign was selling the feeling of being spontaneously on the water in beautiful places. In-water photography communicates that feeling more directly than any other camera position can.

Building the physical skill and the equipment capability for in-water work is a significant investment. It is also the investment that most directly produces the visual territory that separates water photography specialists from photographers who work near water. The images that come from that territory are the ones brands specifically request when they have seen what in-water work produces in the market and they are the images worth the cold and the physical effort and the practice required to produce them at campaign quality.

The Creative Results That Justify the Physical Investment

The physical demands of in-water photography are real enough that it is worth being explicit about what specifically those demands produce that no other photography approach can. The images that come from being in the water with the subject are different in a specific creative way: they communicate physical immersion in the water environment rather than observation of it. That difference is the creative result that justifies every cold water entry, every difficult positioning session, and every hour of practice developing the physical skill to operate in that environment effectively.

For the Oru Kayak campaign, the in-water images were the ones most consistently identified by the brand as campaign-defining. Not the aerial drone shots, though those were excellent. Not the shore-based telephoto shots, though those served important narrative purposes. The images where the camera was in the same water as the kayaker, looking up from below or across from the same surface level, were the images that most powerfully communicated the experience of being on the water that the campaign was designed to sell. Those images existed because the photographer was willing to be physically in that environment rather than documenting it from outside it.

That willingness to be in the environment rather than adjacent to it is one of the defining commitments of outdoor photography at its best. It is also one of the most consistent differentiators between photographers whose work genuinely moves audiences and photographers whose work impresses audiences without moving them. Movement in photography, the quality of making a viewer feel something genuine about the experience being depicted, almost always comes from physical proximity and genuine engagement with the environment rather than from technical excellence applied from a comfortable distance. In-water photography is the most literal expression of that principle and the results it produces are the most literal evidence that the principle is true.
