Protecting Gear From Impact on Rough Terrain
Water gets most of the attention when photographers talk about protecting gear in the field, but impact has cost me more equipment over the years than moisture ever has. A drop, a knock against rock, a bag set down wrong on uneven ground — those moments happen fast, and they happen on almost every kind of shoot that takes a camera off pavement.
What follows is the actual system I've built for reducing impact risk on rough terrain, most of it learned the hard way rather than read in a manual. Why Impact Damage Is Different From Weather Damage
Weather damage tends to be gradual and at least partially preventable through covers, housings, and drying routines built into a normal field workflow. Impact damage is instant, and by the time it's happened, the only thing left to manage is the aftermath rather than the prevention.
That difference changes how I think about protecting gear on rough terrain. Weather protection is largely reactive — respond to the conditions in front of you. Impact protection has to be proactive and built into how gear is carried and handled well before any specific risky moment presents itself, because there's rarely a warning before a drop happens.
Rough terrain multiplies the risk in ways flat ground doesn't — uneven footing, loose rock, exposed edges, and the simple physics of gear falling further and onto harder surfaces than it would on a groomed trail. The protection strategy has to account for that added risk specifically, not just for general outdoor use.
The Lens-Swap Mistake That Changed How I Handle Gear on Rough Terrain
Years ago, mid-climb, I made the mistake of swapping lenses while my footing wasn't fully secure. My foot slipped at the exact moment the lens was detached from the body, and it fell a couple hundred feet down the route. It was gone instantly, and there was nothing to do but keep working and process the loss later.
That moment reshaped a rule I now follow without exception: gear only comes fully apart — a lens off the body, a piece detached from its tether — when I'm on stable ground, both feet planted, with nothing about my position actively in question. Technical terrain gets zero exceptions to this rule, no matter how much a shot seems to justify rushing.
It's a simple rule, but it's the single change that's prevented the most repeat incidents since. Most equipment loss on rough terrain doesn't come from a design flaw in the gear, it comes from a moment of impatience about when and where a change gets made.
Bags and Cases Built for Impact, Not Just Weather
Not all protective bags are built for the same threat. A lot of camera bags marketed as rugged are actually optimized for weather resistance — sealed zippers, water-resistant fabric — without much real structural protection against a hard knock or a fall against rock.
For rough terrain specifically, I look for bags with a rigid or semi-rigid internal structure, not just padded dividers, since padding alone compresses under enough force and doesn't always protect against a sharp impact point like a rock edge. The bag itself needs to hold its shape under stress, not just cushion what's inside it.
I also pay attention to how a bag distributes impact across its structure rather than concentrating it at one point. A bag that transfers a knock evenly across its frame protects the gear inside far better than one that flexes and lets the impact travel straight through to whatever's packed against that side.
Padding Strategy Inside the Bag
Padding matters as much for how it's arranged as for how much of it there is. I position the most impact-sensitive gear — camera bodies, especially with a lens attached — toward the center of the bag, surrounded by softer items on every side, rather than against an outer wall where an impact from outside the bag transfers most directly.
I also avoid letting gear shift freely inside a bag during movement on rough terrain, since loose items building momentum inside a pack can cause as much damage as an external impact. Dividers and compression straps that lock gear in place matter more on technical terrain than they do on a flat trail where movement is more predictable.
For lenses specifically, I use dedicated padded pouches even inside an already-padded bag, adding a second layer of protection around the parts of the kit that are both the most expensive and the most vulnerable to impact from any angle.
Straps, Tethers, and Redundant Attachment Points
Any gear that's out of the bag and in active use on rough terrain gets a physical tether back to me, not just a strap around my neck or shoulder. A neck strap alone doesn't prevent a camera from swinging into rock on a scramble or a fall from happening if the strap slips off in an awkward position.
I use a dedicated tether point, separate from the standard carrying strap, whenever I'm moving through genuinely technical terrain with a camera actively accessible rather than packed away. That redundancy means a single point of failure — a strap coming loose, a clip failing — doesn't result in gear falling free with nothing else holding it.
This matters just as much for smaller accessories as it does for camera bodies. Lens caps, filters, and small tools have a way of disappearing on rough terrain if they're not secured, and losing a small piece of gear mid-shoot can be almost as disruptive as damaging something larger.
How I Carry Gear Differently on Technical Terrain vs. Flat Trail
On flat, stable trail, I'm comfortable carrying a camera accessible on a strap, ready to shoot without much friction. On genuinely technical terrain — scrambling, exposed sections, anything requiring both hands free at moments — that same setup becomes a liability rather than a convenience.
My rule for technical sections is that a camera not actively being used to compose a shot in that exact moment goes into the bag, secured, rather than staying accessible on a strap "just in case." The few seconds it costs to access it again is a worthwhile trade against the risk of it swinging into rock or catching on something during a difficult move.
This means accepting that I'll occasionally miss a spontaneous shot because gear was packed away for safety during a technical section. That tradeoff is one I've made peace with — a missed shot is recoverable in a way that damaged or lost gear on a remote trip often isn't.
What I Do With Gear I'm Not Actively Shooting With
Any body or lens not in active use during a technical section goes fully inside the bag, padded and secured, rather than clipped externally where it's exposed to knocks against rock or terrain. External attachment points on a bag are convenient but expose gear to impact in a way internal storage doesn't.
I also think about the bag's own position on my body during technical movement, not just what's inside it. A bag riding low and loose swings and catches on terrain far more than one that's cinched tight and positioned to move with my body rather than against it during a climb or scramble.
This extra step of repacking gear before a technical section takes a few minutes I sometimes resent losing to logistics. But those few minutes have prevented more damage over the years than almost any other single habit in my field kit management.
Protecting Lenses Specifically During Changes in the Field
Lens changes are one of the highest-risk moments for impact damage, since both the lens and the body are briefly unprotected and disconnected from each other. On rough terrain, I minimize how often changes happen at all by planning shot lists that reduce unnecessary swaps, rather than changing lenses reactively as compositions change.
When a change is genuinely necessary, I do it low to the ground, seated or braced if the terrain allows, rather than standing on uncertain footing. Getting my center of gravity low and stable during the single most vulnerable moment of gear handling has prevented more near-misses than I can count.
I also keep both the outgoing and incoming lens caps easily accessible before starting a change, so there's no fumbling mid-swap looking for a cap while holding an exposed lens element in one hand and an open camera body in the other on unstable ground.
Camera Body Habits That Reduce Impact Risk
Beyond bags and tethers, a few simple handling habits reduce impact risk on their own. I never set a camera body down directly on rough or uneven ground, even briefly, without first confirming a genuinely stable surface — a habit that sounds obvious but gets skipped constantly under time pressure on a shoot.
I also avoid handing gear directly between people on technical terrain unless both parties have a secure, stable position first. A gear handoff at the wrong moment, on the wrong footing, is a common and completely avoidable way for equipment to end up damaged or dropped entirely.
None of these habits are complicated, but they require discipline under pressure, which is exactly when they're hardest to maintain and most likely to be skipped. Building them into muscle memory, rather than relying on remembering them in the moment, is what actually makes them effective.
Insurance as the Last Line of Defense
Even with every precaution, impact damage happens, which is why I treat gear insurance as a non-negotiable cost of doing this kind of work rather than an optional add-on. Coverage with a manageable deductible has meant that impact incidents I've had over the years were financially recoverable rather than business-threatening.
Insurance doesn't prevent damage, but it changes the calculation around risk in the field. I'm willing to take a calculated risk to get a genuinely important shot on rough terrain knowing that a worst-case gear failure, while costly and disruptive, isn't catastrophic to the business the way it would be with uninsured equipment.
I think of insurance as the final layer in a system that starts with prevention — bags, tethers, handling habits — and ends with financial protection for the failures that prevention can't fully eliminate. Both layers matter, and neither one alone is sufficient on its own.
What I've Changed Permanently After Losing Gear to Impact
Every piece of gear I've lost to an impact incident has changed something permanent about how I work afterward, whether that's a specific rule about lens changes or a broader shift toward more conservative gear handling on technical terrain generally. None of those lessons came cheap, and I'd rather pass them along than watch someone else learn them the same way.
The biggest overall shift has been toward treating gear protection as part of the shot planning itself, not an afterthought handled once I'm already on location. Thinking through how gear will be carried and protected on a specific piece of terrain, before I ever get there, has prevented far more damage than reacting well after something's already gone wrong.
Rough terrain isn't going away from this kind of work, and neither is the risk that comes with it. What's changed is how deliberately I plan around that risk, rather than trusting instinct and hoping the terrain cooperates on any given day.
Protecting Gear Between Locations, Not Just on the Trail
A lot of impact damage I've seen, including some of my own, happens during transport between shoot locations rather than during the actual technical terrain the shoot was built around. Gear tossed into a vehicle without real securing, or a bag set down hard on a rough road surface during a quick stop, can undo careful field handling in a single careless moment.
When I'm moving gear by vehicle, including on longer road trips, I keep cases secured against shifting during rough sections of road, using the same logic I apply to a pack on technical terrain — nothing loose enough to build momentum and slam into something else during sudden braking or uneven surfaces.
I also treat loading and unloading gear at each stop as its own small risk window, since that's often when gear is briefly unsecured, being handed between hands, or set down on whatever surface happens to be nearest. Slowing down deliberately during those specific moments has prevented more damage than any padding inside the case itself.
This extends to how I pack a vehicle for a multi-day trip in the first place, placing the most impact-sensitive cases where they're least likely to shift or take pressure from other gear stacked on top, rather than treating the cargo area as one undifferentiated space where anything goes wherever it fits.
Airport and airline handling adds its own version of this risk, since checked cases go through handling I have no control over at all. For anything traveling as checked baggage, I use hard cases specifically rated for that kind of impact, and I've stopped assuming a bag marketed as "travel-friendly" is automatically built to survive the actual handling airline baggage systems put it through on a long international routing.
The common thread across all of these transport scenarios is the same one that applies on the trail: impact risk doesn't announce itself in advance, and the only real defense is treating every handoff, every load-in, and every mode of transport as a moment where careless handling could undo everything done right up to that point. Building that awareness into a genuine habit, rather than a special precaution reserved only for obviously risky terrain, is what actually keeps gear intact across a long, demanding season of travel.
