I check wind conditions as carefully as I check light before a desert shoot, because a calm morning and a windy afternoon on the same day call for genuinely different gear-handling approaches. A shoot that seemed low-risk at sunrise can turn into a serious sand-exposure risk by midday without any change in the overall shoot location.
On windier days, I shift toward keeping the camera under a jacket or inside a bag between actual shooting moments, rather than carrying it exposed on a strap the way I might in calmer conditions. That extra layer of handling discipline costs a little speed but meaningfully reduces cumulative exposure over a full day.

Insurance, Backup Gear, and Accepting Some Risk
Even with a careful routine, I've accepted that desert shooting carries a baseline level of gear risk that no amount of preventive habit fully eliminates. Gear insurance has been essential for exactly this kind of demanding environmental work, and I treat the modest monthly cost as a non-negotiable part of doing business in conditions this abrasive.
I also travel with enough backup capability that a single piece of compromised gear doesn't end a shoot day entirely. A body or lens that starts showing signs of grit-related trouble mid-shoot gets swapped out and set aside for a full cleaning and inspection later, rather than pushed through the rest of the day and risking further damage.
Accepting that some risk is simply part of working in this kind of environment has made me more relaxed and more effective in the field, paradoxically. Clothing and Personal Gear Matter Too
Protecting the camera is only part of the picture on a desert shoot. My own clothing and personal gear need the same consideration, since sand working into a zipper on my own pack or a pocket seal on my clothing eventually transfers directly onto whatever camera equipment shares that same space during the day.
I've learned to think of my entire kit, not just the camera itself, as part of a single system that either keeps sand contained or lets it spread. A gritty jacket pocket or a sand-filled backpack seam becomes a transfer point every time gear goes in or out of it, undoing careful camera-specific precautions if the surrounding gear isn't managed with the same discipline.
Closed, sealed storage for anything that touches the camera directly, lens cloths, spare batteries, memory cards, matters as much as the housing on the camera body itself. I keep these smaller items in their own sealed pouches specifically so they're not picking up grit while sitting loose in a bag that's being opened and closed throughout a shooting day.

What Changes on a Multi-Day Desert Production

On longer desert productions, I build in a more thorough gear inspection every two to three days rather than relying solely on the nightly routine, checking deeper into seams and mechanisms that a quick daily wipe-down might not fully address, since grit that's been building gradually is easier to catch and clear before it becomes a genuine mechanical problem.
Vehicle-based storage also becomes more important on multi-day work, since a hotel room or a tent doesn't offer the same sealed, controlled environment a vehicle interior does for keeping gear protected between shooting days. I prioritize a clean, sealed vehicle storage setup specifically for any production stretching beyond a single day in this kind of environment.
I've also learned to schedule a genuine rest day or lighter shooting day partway through a longer desert production specifically to allow a fuller gear service, rather than pushing straight through the full schedule and discovering accumulated grit-related problems only once the production has already wrapped.
Heat as a Compounding Factor With Sand
Desert heat and sand exposure interact in ways that make each problem worse than it would be in isolation. High temperatures make cleaning solutions and cloths less effective, cause more hand perspiration that transfers moisture into an environment I'm otherwise trying to keep dry, and generally make the careful, methodical cleaning routine harder to execute well.
I've adjusted my end-of-day routine specifically for genuinely hot conditions, working in shade or inside an air-conditioned vehicle whenever possible rather than attempting a careful cleaning pass in direct heat, since rushed cleaning under uncomfortable conditions tends to miss exactly the small details that matter most.
Heat also affects gear itself beyond the sand question, with battery performance and certain seals behaving differently in extreme temperatures than they would in milder conditions.
