Wind rarely shows up alone on an exposed shoot. It brings sand, grit, dust, salt spray, loose gravel, whatever the terrain has lying around, and all of it wants to end up inside your camera body the moment you open a port door or swap a lens. I've had gear compromised by conditions I barely noticed in the moment because I was focused entirely on the shot in front of me.

Dual-card-slot bodies that write simultaneously to both cards have simplified this considerably, since I'm not opening a card door mid-shoot to manage capacity the way I might have years ago. Planning ahead with adequate card capacity for the day removes one whole category of unnecessary exposure to blown debris.
When a lens change is genuinely unavoidable mid-shoot, I look for any available windbreak first, a vehicle, a rock formation, even my own body angled correctly, before opening anything. A few seconds spent finding partial shelter is a small cost against the real risk of grit working into an open lens mount.
Using Your Own Body and Gear as a Windbreak
When there's no natural shelter available, I use my own body as the first line of defense, turning my back to the wind and shielding the open camera in the lee created by my own posture. A jacket, a pack, even a held-up piece of gear can extend that same principle, creating a small pocket of relative calm around an open camera body during a necessary swap. This kind of improvised shelter isn't a substitute for genuinely careful planning, but on remote or fast-moving shoots where you can't always predict exactly when a swap will become necessary, having a reflexive habit of creating shelter with whatever's on hand has prevented more than one avoidable exposure.
Sealing and Bagging Gear Between Uses
Any gear not actively in use goes into a closed bag, not just set down or slung over a shoulder, on any location with meaningful wind and loose debris. That includes backup bodies, lenses not currently mounted, and anything with an exposed port or dial that isn't being actively operated in that moment.
I also pay attention to bag design itself on exposed shoots, favoring covered zippers and flaps over exposed mesh pockets that let fine dust straight through. A bag that seals well against blown grit is a genuinely worthwhile investment for anyone who regularly works exposed coastal or desert conditions.
For gear that's especially vulnerable, drones with exposed rotors and sensors, action cameras with open port doors, I'm even more deliberate about bagging between uses, since these smaller devices often have less robust sealing than a primary camera body and lens combination built for heavier abuse.
Moisture Control Habits That Also Help With Grit
I pack silica gel packets and even dehydrated rice alongside gear that's been exposed to any combination of wind, salt spray, or general environmental grime, a habit I originally built around water exposure that's turned out to help with dust and grit as well by keeping the internal bag environment drier and less prone to particles clumping onto damp surfaces.
Fine sand and dust adhere far more readily to any surface with even slight residual moisture, whether from sea spray, morning condensation, or your own hands. Keeping gear genuinely dry between uses reduces how much debris actually sticks to it in the first place, beyond just reducing rust and corrosion risk.
This overlap between moisture control and grit control means a single set of habits, drying gear thoroughly, using desiccant packets, sealing bags tightly, does double duty on exposed coastal shoots where wind, salt, and moisture are all present simultaneously rather than as separate, unrelated risks.
Cleaning Routines After an Exposed Shoot Day
Every exposed shoot day ends with a real cleaning pass before gear goes back into long-term storage, not just a quick wipe-down. I check port doors, dial seams, and lens mount threads specifically for any grit that's worked its way in during the day, since these are the spots that quietly accumulate damage over repeated exposure.
A proper cleaning kit lives in my bag at all times specifically for this purpose, brushes and blower bulbs rather than anything that introduces additional moisture or abrasive contact with a sensor or lens element. Compressed air canisters get used carefully and sparingly, since they carry their own risk of driving grit deeper into a seam rather than out of it.
I've made this end-of-day cleaning pass a non-negotiable habit specifically because grit damage tends to be cumulative and quiet rather than sudden and obvious. Skipping the routine after a single exposed day rarely causes visible damage, but skipping it repeatedly is exactly how a sticking dial or a gritty focus ring eventually shows up.
Insurance as the Last Line of Defense
Even with every precaution, gear working in genuinely harsh, exposed conditions eventually takes some damage, and I've made peace with that as a cost of doing this kind of work reliably over years rather than treating any single incident as a preventable failure on my part. Gear insurance has become a non-negotiable part of my operating costs as a result.
A modest monthly premium against a manageable deductible has paid for itself many times over across a career spent regularly in genuinely harsh conditions, wind-driven grit, water exposure, and the general wear of demanding remote locations. I treat it as a fixed cost of the work rather than an optional extra.
Having that safety net also changes how I make in-field decisions. I'm less tempted to avoid a genuinely worthwhile shot purely out of fear of gear damage, because I know a real failure is a manageable financial event rather than a catastrophic one, which lets me make creative decisions based on the shot rather than purely on risk aversion.
Building These Habits Into Muscle Memory
None of these habits are individually complicated, but they only actually protect gear if they're consistent, applied on every exposed shoot rather than remembered occasionally after a bad experience reminds you why they matter. I've found the habits that stick best are the ones built into the normal rhythm of a shoot day rather than treated as an extra, optional step.
Checking wind and debris conditions before opening a bag, minimizing unnecessary swaps, using available shelter, bagging idle gear, and running a real cleaning pass at the end of the day have all become close to automatic for me at this point, the same way checking a light meter or reviewing a shot list has become automatic.

Protecting Drones and Small Accessories From the Same Risk
Drones face a distinct version of this problem, since rotors and exposed sensors are genuinely vulnerable to fine grit in ways a sealed camera body isn't. I'm especially cautious about launching and landing in high wind on loose, sandy, or gravelly terrain, since that's exactly when debris gets kicked directly into an exposed rotor housing during takeoff and landing.
I try to launch and land from the cleanest available surface nearby, a rock slab, a packed trail section, even a tarp laid down specifically for this purpose, rather than the first open patch of ground I happen to be standing near. Smaller accessories, spare batteries, memory card wallets, lens caps, are easy to overlook in this conversation, but they're just as vulnerable to getting coated in fine grit that then transfers into a camera body the next time they're handled. I keep these in their own sealed pouches within the larger bag, rather than loose in a side pocket, specifically to avoid this transfer risk.
What I Wish I'd Known Before My First Bad Exposure
My own habits here weren't built from careful planning, they were built from a specific bad experience that taught me how quickly fine grit can compromise gear I'd assumed was more sealed than it actually was. That kind of lesson tends to stick harder than any general advice ever could, but it's an expensive way to learn.
What I wish I'd understood earlier is that weather sealing on most gear is designed primarily around moisture, not fine particulate matter, and a body rated well against rain can still be genuinely vulnerable to sand and dust working into the same seams and openings moisture would otherwise be kept out of.

Packing Gear for Travel to Windy, Remote Locations
How gear travels to a location matters as much as how it's handled once there. I pack cases with an eye toward how quickly I'll need access to specific items on arrival, since a well-organized case means less time with everything exposed to ambient conditions during setup at a genuinely windy trailhead or coastal access point.
I also think about redundancy specifically for exposed jobs, packing a spare set of the most vulnerable small components, lens caps, port covers, in case one gets lost or damaged during a windy transition between vehicle and shooting location, a small buffer that's saved a shoot day more than once when a single cap blew away and vanished into loose terrain.
Case selection itself matters too, since a hard case with a genuinely reliable seal protects gear far better during transport through a windy trailhead parking area or an exposed put-in point than a soft bag that offers convenience but far less protection against the same blowing grit that threatens gear once it's out and in active use.
Training an Assistant to Handle Gear the Same Way
When I'm working with an assistant or second shooter on an exposed job, I brief them specifically on gear handling habits, not just shot coverage, since a second person unfamiliar with these routines can undo a lot of careful discipline by setting a bag down loosely or leaving a port open longer than necessary during a busy moment.
I've found it worth spending a few extra minutes at the start of a windy shoot day walking a newer assistant through exactly how I want gear bagged, shielded, and handled, rather than assuming good general photography instincts automatically translate into good debris-protection habits on a location they haven't worked in before.
