Shooting Paragliding From the Ground vs. In the Air

The first time I photographed paragliding, I made the decision that felt obvious at the time: get in the air alongside the pilot, since that's clearly where the real shot lives. It took a few more trips, and a good number of frames I was disappointed with, to understand that the ground was actually giving me images I couldn't get any other way, and that the choice between the two isn't really about which is objectively better.

Paragliding is one of the activities I've shot first-hand enough times to have a genuinely informed opinion on this, and the honest answer is that ground and air each solve a different storytelling problem. Here's how I actually decide between shooting from the ground and shooting from the air.

What the Ground Actually Gives You

Shooting from the ground gives me something the air genuinely can't: scale. A pilot silhouetted against a full landscape, mountains or coastline stretching behind them, communicates the scope of the flight and the terrain in a way that's simply unavailable once I'm also in the air at a similar altitude, looking at the same scene from the same relative position.

Ground shooting also gives far more creative control over composition, since I'm not simultaneously managing my own flight while trying to frame a shot. I can move deliberately, choose a specific vantage point, wait for the pilot to pass through a precise spot in the frame relative to the landscape, all without the added complexity of piloting my own glider at the same time.

Stability matters too. A tripod or simply solid ground under my feet lets me use techniques, a longer exposure to show motion blur in the canopy, a slower shutter speed to convey speed against a static landscape, that would be genuinely difficult or impossible while also managing my own aerial movement in the air alongside the subject.

What Only the Air Can Actually Deliver

Shooting from the air alongside the pilot gives an intimacy and perspective the ground simply cannot replicate: the pilot's actual point of view, the canopy directly overhead, the landscape falling away beneath them exactly as they're experiencing it in that moment. That perspective communicates the feeling of flight in a way no ground shot, however well composed, fully captures.

Being in the air also means I can react to a pilot's specific movements in real time, a sudden bank, a moment of genuine joy or focus on their face, in a way that's impossible to anticipate and position for from a fixed ground location. The air gives access to spontaneous, in-the-moment expression that ground shooting simply can't reach.

There's also a category of shot, wing-tip detail, close framing of the pilot's hands on the controls, the texture of the canopy fabric against open sky, that only exists as an option when I'm genuinely close to the subject in three-dimensional space rather than photographing them from a fixed distance below.

The Real Logistics of Shooting From the Air

Shooting from the air means either flying tandem specifically to photograph another pilot, or flying my own glider solo while also operating a camera, and both options come with real logistical demands that ground shooting simply doesn't. Managing a camera one-handed while also managing a glider's controls requires a level of comfort with the equipment that takes real time to build safely.

I don't attempt aerial paragliding photography until I'm genuinely confident in my own flying first, since safety in the air has to come before getting any specific shot, no matter how good that shot might be. This isn't a technique that photographers should attempt without real flying competence built up first and independently of the photography itself.

Coordination with the other pilot matters enormously too. Before any aerial shoot, I talk through the planned flight path, relative positioning, and general timing with the pilot being photographed, since improvising that coordination mid-air, at altitude, with two people managing their own gliders, is far riskier than settling the plan on the ground beforehand.

Reading Light and Weather Differently From Each Position

Ground shooting gives more predictable control over light, since I can position myself relative to the sun and wait for the pilot to pass through the right angle, adjusting my own location if the light isn't working rather than being locked into wherever the flight path happens to be that day.

From the air, I'm working with whatever light exists at whatever position the flight path puts me in, with far less ability to reposition purely for better light without also disrupting the flight itself. This means aerial paragliding shots require more acceptance of imperfect light conditions than ground shots, where I can simply wait or relocate.

Wind conditions also affect the decision directly. Genuinely gusty or unpredictable wind makes aerial shooting riskier and less controlled, and on days like that, I default to ground shooting even if the original plan called for an aerial sequence, since safety and actual usable results both favor staying grounded when conditions are marginal.

Lens Choices for Ground vs. Air

Ground shooting benefits from a longer lens that can isolate the pilot against the sky or landscape from a real distance, since I'm often positioned well below and away from the actual flight path for safety and practical reasons. A telephoto reach lets me compress the pilot against a dramatic backdrop without needing to be anywhere near the flight path itself.

In the air, a wider lens usually serves the shot better, since the goal is often capturing the immediate environment around the pilot, the canopy, the immediate landscape below, rather than isolating a distant subject. The proximity of aerial shooting simply doesn't call for the same reach that ground shooting requires to get a comparable frame.

I carry both options on any paragliding assignment where I might end up shooting from either position, since committing to a single lens choice before knowing exactly how the day's shoot will unfold risks being unprepared for whichever position actually ends up producing the stronger material that day.

Safety Considerations That Actually Drive the Decision

Safety is the real first filter in deciding between ground and air, more than any creative preference. Aerial photography while flying, whether tandem or solo, introduces genuine risk that has to be weighed honestly against the specific value of the shot being attempted, not treated as a given default option.

I've turned down aerial shooting opportunities specifically because conditions that day, wind, visibility, the specific site's terrain, made the added risk not worth whatever shot I might have gotten. Ground shooting is always the safer default, and I treat any decision to shoot from the air as one that has to actively justify itself against that safer baseline.

This same safety-first filter applies to camera equipment choices too. A secure strap system and a setup that keeps both hands available for flying controls when needed matters more in aerial paragliding photography than in almost any other kind of adventure shooting I do, since a dropped or fumbled camera in the air carries risk beyond just losing the shot.

Building a Shot List That Uses Both Positions Deliberately

On a full paragliding assignment, I now plan explicitly for which specific shots I want from the ground and which I want from the air, rather than committing entirely to one position and hoping it covers everything the final edit will need. The strongest paragliding stories I've delivered have combined both perspectives rather than relying on just one.

Ground shots typically anchor the wider story, establishing scale and location, while aerial shots deliver the emotional, intimate moments that make a viewer feel like they're experiencing the flight themselves rather than just watching it from below. Neither position alone tells the complete story as well as the two combined.

I sequence a shoot day around this combined plan, often starting with ground positioning to capture the wider establishing shots before a flight even begins, then transitioning to an aerial sequence once the pilot is airborne and conditions have been confirmed safe and stable enough for that riskier phase of the shoot.

What I'd Tell a Photographer New to Shooting Paragliding

I'd tell them to start on the ground, fully, before ever considering an aerial approach. Ground shooting builds an understanding of the sport's rhythm, typical flight paths, and light conditions without the added risk and complexity that aerial shooting introduces, and that ground-level fluency makes any eventual aerial work far more effective once it's actually attempted.

I'd also tell them not to treat aerial shooting as automatically the more impressive or more valuable option. Some of the strongest paragliding images I've delivered to clients have been ground shots that used scale and landscape context in a way an aerial shot simply couldn't have replicated, regardless of how dramatic the aerial perspective might sound in theory.

Ultimately, the choice isn't ground versus air as competing options, it's understanding what story a specific shot needs to tell and picking the position that actually serves that story, rather than defaulting to whichever position feels more exciting to attempt on a given day.

Working With a Tandem Pilot as My Own Aerial Platform

On assignments where I want genuine aerial coverage but don't want to split my attention between flying my own glider and operating a camera, I've flown tandem specifically as a passenger, with an experienced tandem pilot handling the actual flying so I can dedicate full attention to composition and camera settings.

This arrangement changes the whole risk and creative calculation. With a tandem pilot managing the glider, I can use both hands for the camera, change settings more deliberately, and react to a subject's movements with far more precision than I could managing my own controls simultaneously. It's become my default approach for aerial paragliding coverage on client work specifically.

Coordination with the tandem pilot matters just as much as coordination with the subject being photographed. I brief the tandem pilot in advance on roughly where I want to be positioned relative to the other glider, how close is safe and useful, and what kind of relative motion, banking, altitude changes, will actually produce the compositions I'm after that day.

This tandem arrangement does add cost and logistical complexity to a shoot, arranging an experienced tandem pilot, additional insurance considerations, and coordinating three parties in the air rather than two. But for client work where the aerial shot genuinely matters to the final deliverable, I've found the investment consistently worth it compared to attempting the same shot while also managing my own solo flight.

What Changes When the Subject Is a Beginner Versus an Experienced Pilot

A subject's own experience level in the air changes both the safety calculation and the realistic shot list considerably. An experienced pilot can execute a planned flight path precisely and predictably, which makes both ground and aerial shooting far more reliable, since I can trust that agreed-upon positioning and timing will actually hold once they're airborne.

A beginner pilot introduces more variability into exactly where and how they'll fly, which shifts my planning toward ground shooting more heavily by default, since a less predictable flight path is harder to safely coordinate around in the air, and ground positioning gives me more flexibility to adjust to unexpected movement without the added complication of also being airborne myself.

I always ask directly about a subject's experience level before finalizing a shot plan, rather than assuming based on how confident they sound in conversation, since confidence and actual flying experience don't always match up, and the safety stakes of misjudging that gap are considerably higher in the air than on the ground.

For genuinely inexperienced pilots, I lean almost entirely on ground-based coverage, using their first flights as an opportunity to build the kind of scale and landscape-forward imagery that ground positioning does best, rather than pushing for aerial coverage that would introduce unnecessary risk for a subject still building basic flying competence.

Scouting a Launch and Landing Site Before Committing to a Position

Ground positioning decisions for paragliding depend heavily on understanding a specific site's launch and landing zones in advance, since the strongest compositional vantage points are only useful if they're also safe places to actually stand during the moments a glider is launching or landing nearby.

I walk a site in advance whenever possible, identifying not just where the best light and background will be but also where pilots will actually be moving during launch and landing, so I can position myself somewhere that captures a strong angle without standing in an active flight path or landing zone during a critical moment.

This scouting also reveals where the most dramatic backdrops actually align with realistic flight paths, since a beautiful vantage point is useless if the flight path never actually passes through the frame I'd be composing from that position. Matching scouted positions to the pilot's actual planned route has saved me from setting up in spots that looked promising but never delivered a usable frame, and it's a scouting step I now treat as mandatory rather than optional on any new paragliding location I haven't personally worked before. Even a quick walk-through the afternoon before a shoot, rather than a formal scouting trip days in advance, has consistently paid off enough that I no longer skip it even on a tight schedule. That short investment of time has repeatedly saved an otherwise wasted setup, and it's become as automatic a part of my pre-shoot routine as checking the weather forecast itself, since the two pieces of information, terrain and conditions, ultimately shape the same set of positioning decisions anyway, and skipping either one leaves that decision resting on guesswork rather than something I've actually verified firsthand, on foot, before the pressure of an actual shoot day sets in.
