Why Burst Mode Isn't a Substitute for Real Timing Skill

It's tempting to rely on high-speed burst shooting to compensate for uncertain timing, firing continuously through a window and hoping one frame lands correctly. I use burst mode selectively, but I've found it's a poor substitute for genuine timing skill, because the specific moment that makes a paragliding shot work is often narrower than even a fast burst rate can reliably capture cleanly.

How Launch and Landing Windows Differ From Mid-Flight Timing

Launch and landing carry their own distinct timing challenges separate from the mid-flight moments most people associate with paragliding photography. Launch happens fast, often within a few seconds of committed running and wing inflation, and the window for a strong launch image is genuinely brief, requiring the camera to already be up and ready well before the pilot actually commits to the run.

Landing presents a different kind of challenge, since a pilot's approach and final flare can vary considerably based on last-second wind conditions right at ground level, which means the exact spot and moment of touchdown isn't always fully predictable even a few seconds out. I've learned to stay loose on framing during a landing sequence, tracking the pilot's approach rather than committing early to a fixed composition that assumes a specific touchdown point.

Both of these windows reward being fully set up and ready well before the actual action starts, since there's rarely time to adjust settings or reposition once launch or landing is actively underway. Gear Considerations That Support Fast, Accurate Timing

Paragliding photography rewards gear that responds quickly and predictably, since any lag between intention and capture works directly against the tight timing margins this discipline demands. I prioritize fast, reliable autofocus and minimal shutter lag over other gear considerations that might matter more in a slower-paced adventure discipline, because the timing margin here simply doesn't tolerate mechanical delay on top of the human anticipation challenge already involved.

What a Second Attempt Actually Costs on a Paragliding Shoot

Unlike a lot of ground-based adventure photography, where asking a subject to repeat an action costs relatively little time or effort, a second attempt at a specific paragliding pass or maneuver comes with a real cost in wind, light, and pilot fatigue that changes across even a short shoot. Conditions that supported a clean pass ten minutes ago may have shifted by the time a second attempt is requested, meaning a repeated pass isn't always a genuinely equivalent opportunity to the first one.

I factor this cost into how I plan a shoot, treating each pass as a meaningful opportunity rather than assuming unlimited attempts are realistically available, and prioritizing getting the timing right on the passes I know I'll get rather than counting on a second chance to correct for a missed first attempt.
