Waterproofing Gear for a Full Day on a Paddle Shoot
I've had a water housing fastener come loose against a wetsuit and flood a camera mid-shoot, and I've packed gear that came home bone dry after an entire day spent on and around open water. The difference between those two outcomes almost never comes down to luck. It comes down to a specific set of habits built before the boat ever leaves the shore, and refined every time one of those habits fails in the field.
Paddle shoots, whether it's a kayak, a canoe, or a stand-up paddleboard, put gear in more sustained contact with moisture risk than almost any other kind of adventure assignment I take on. Splash, Submersion, and Humidity Are Three Different Problems
The first mistake I made early in my paddle-shoot years was treating "waterproofing" as one single problem with one single solution. It isn't. Splash exposure from paddle strokes and small wake is a near-constant, low-intensity threat. Full submersion from a capsize or a dropped item is rare but catastrophic. Humidity and condensation build up quietly over hours even when nothing visibly gets wet at all.
Each of those three risks calls for a different layer of protection, and I've learned not to assume that solving for one automatically covers the others. A dry bag handles submersion risk well but does nothing for the slow humidity buildup inside a sealed bag over a long day. A rain cover handles splash but would be useless in an actual capsize.
Planning a paddle shoot's gear protection now starts with an honest assessment of which of these three risks is actually most likely for the specific water and conditions that day, rather than applying one blanket solution and assuming it covers everything.
Dry Bags and Dry Boxes: Choosing the Right Tool
A soft dry bag is my default for gear that isn't actively in use, cameras waiting their turn, spare lenses, extra batteries. It's lightweight, packs down small, and handles splash and brief submersion well. But a soft bag offers little impact protection, which matters if it gets knocked against a hard surface inside a kayak hull.
For anything genuinely fragile or expensive, I use a hard-shell dry box instead. It's bulkier and takes up more space in a boat that often has limited storage, but the rigid shell protects against impact in a way a soft bag never will, which matters most during a capsize when gear can slam against rocks, a paddle, or the hull itself.
I've settled into a hybrid approach: the camera actually in use for the day rides in a smaller, quick-access soft pouch clipped securely to the boat, while everything not currently needed lives in the hard box. That balance keeps working gear accessible without leaving it exposed to unnecessary risk the rest of the time.
The Camera That's Actually in Use Needs Its Own System
The gear sitting sealed in a dry box is the easy part. The real challenge on a paddle shoot is the camera that's actively being used throughout the day, since it can't stay sealed away if I'm shooting continuously. That camera needs its own dedicated protection that still allows fast, unobstructed operation.
A water housing is the most complete solution when the shoot calls for shots from at or below the waterline, but housings add weight, reduce handling speed, and introduce their own failure point if a seal isn't checked properly before every use. I check every gasket and seal by hand before the boat launches, every single time, regardless of how recently it was checked before.
For shots from within the boat that don't require water-level access, a simple rain sleeve with a clear front panel for the lens is often enough, and it's far faster to operate than a full housing. Matching the protection level to the actual shot being attempted, rather than defaulting to maximum protection at all times, keeps the shoot moving at a workable pace.
Silica Packets and Dehydrated Rice as a Low-Effort Moisture Buffer
One of the simplest habits I've built for water-based shoots is packing silica gel packets and dehydrated rice directly alongside gear inside sealed bags and boxes. Moisture that gets past the main seal, or humidity that builds up inside a sealed container over a long day, gets absorbed by these before it ever reaches the electronics themselves.
This isn't a replacement for proper sealing, it's a backup layer for the moisture that inevitably gets through anyway. Even a well-sealed dry bag isn't a perfect vacuum, and small amounts of humid air get trapped inside every time it's opened and closed throughout a shoot day. The silica and rice quietly absorb that residual moisture over the course of the day.
I replace these packets regularly rather than reusing the same ones indefinitely, since they lose absorption capacity over time and repeated use. It's a genuinely low-cost habit, cheap materials and a few extra minutes of packing, that has meaningfully reduced moisture-related gear problems on water shoots.
What Actually Happens When a Housing Fails
I've had a water housing fastener work loose against my wetsuit mid-shoot and flood a camera, and the lesson from that specific failure wasn't about the housing model itself, it was about the checking routine. The fastener hadn't been visibly damaged. It had simply loosened gradually from repeated contact, and I hadn't rechecked it closely enough between setups that day.
Since then, I treat every fastener, seal, and gasket check as a task that happens immediately before every single water entry, not once at the start of the day. Conditions, temperature, and physical contact with a wetsuit or a boat all shift throughout a day on the water, and a seal that was perfectly tight at sunrise isn't guaranteed to still be tight three hours later.
I also now build a genuine buffer of time into the shoot day specifically for this checking process, rather than treating it as a quick afterthought squeezed in between shots. A flooded camera doesn't just cost that piece of gear, it costs shooting time for the rest of the day if a backup body isn't immediately ready to take over.
Backup Bodies and Redundancy on Water Shoots
Water shoots are where I lean hardest on carrying a genuine backup camera body, not just a backup lens or battery. The failure modes on water, a flooded housing, a dropped camera, a capsize, tend to take a body fully out of commission rather than just degrading its performance, unlike most other environments where a partial failure still leaves something usable.
I keep that backup body sealed in the hard dry box until it's actually needed, rather than exposing it to the same ongoing splash risk as the primary camera. That way, if the primary camera does fail, the backup hasn't already absorbed a full day of incremental moisture exposure before I even need to rely on it.
This redundancy costs real weight and space in a boat that's often already tight on storage, and I've had to make deliberate tradeoffs about what else to leave behind to make room for it. On a paddle shoot specifically, I've never regretted prioritizing that backup body over almost anything else I could have packed instead.
Drying Out Gear at the End of a Shoot Day
The waterproofing job isn't finished when the boat comes out of the water. Gear that's spent a full day near or on the water carries residual humidity even if it never got directly wet, and packing it away sealed and damp is a fast way to cause mold or corrosion damage that doesn't show up until much later.
I open every case and bag as soon as I'm off the water, let everything air out fully before repacking for transport, and wipe down any exterior surfaces that had direct water contact during the day. This end-of-day routine takes maybe fifteen minutes and has prevented far more long-term gear damage than any single piece of equipment I own.
Lenses get special attention during this process, since moisture trapped inside a lens barrel is much harder to fully dry out than moisture on an exterior camera body. I've learned to check lens rings for any resistance or grittiness at the end of a water shoot day, since that's often the first sign that moisture has gotten somewhere it shouldn't have.
Weather Windows and Water Conditions Change the Calculus
Not every paddle shoot carries the same waterproofing risk. Calm, flat water on a warm day is a fundamentally different risk profile than choppy conditions or cold water where a capsize carries real consequences beyond just gear damage. I adjust how much protection I'm willing to trade for speed and accessibility based on that honest read of conditions.
On genuinely calm water, I'll sometimes accept a lighter protection setup that trades some splash resistance for faster, more responsive shooting, since the actual submersion risk that day is low. On rougher water, I default to maximum protection even if it slows down how quickly I can get a camera into position for a shot.
I've learned to make this call before the day starts, based on forecast and put-in conditions, rather than adjusting reactively mid-shoot once gear is already wet or a problem has already occurred. The best waterproofing decision is always the one made in advance, not the one made in response to a failure already underway.
What I'd Tell a Photographer New to Water-Based Shoots
I'd tell them to separate the three risks, splash, submersion, and humidity, and build a specific answer for each rather than assuming one dry bag solves everything. I'd also tell them that a backup camera body, sealed away until genuinely needed, is worth more on a water shoot than almost any other single piece of redundancy they could carry.
I'd tell them to check every seal and fastener immediately before every water entry, not just once at the start of the day, since conditions and wear change throughout a shoot in ways that can loosen even a properly installed seal. And I'd tell them the fifteen minutes spent drying gear out properly at the end of the day matters just as much as anything done while actually on the water.
Securing Gear to the Boat Itself
Waterproofing a camera doesn't matter much if the whole housing goes overboard during a capsize or a sudden wake. Every piece of gear I bring on a paddle shoot gets physically tethered to the boat or to my own body, using a floating strap or leash rated for the actual weight of what it's attached to, not an afterthought accessory added at the last minute.
I test each tether's attachment point before launching, checking that it's secured to something structurally sound on the boat rather than a loop or handle that could tear loose under sudden strain. A tether that fails at the exact moment it's needed provides no real protection at all, so I treat this check with the same seriousness as checking a housing seal.
Floating cases and bags add a meaningful layer of protection beyond the tether itself, since gear that floats is far easier to recover quickly even if a tether does fail, and recovery speed matters enormously for anything that's actually gone into the water, since electronics have a window of time before submersion becomes unrecoverable damage.
Adjusting the Approach for Multi-Day Paddle Trips
A single-day paddle shoot and a multi-day trip carry genuinely different waterproofing challenges. On a multi-day trip, gear doesn't get a clean, controlled end-of-day drying routine back at a vehicle or a home base, it has to be managed inside a tent or a packed boat night after night, often in genuinely humid conditions that never fully clear.
I pack extra silica gel and a larger reserve of dehydrated rice for multi-day trips specifically, since the cumulative humidity exposure over several days without a full drying reset compounds in a way a single-day shoot never has to account for. I also inspect every seal and fastener each morning before relaunching, not just once at the start of the whole trip.
Battery management shifts too, since charging options are often limited or nonexistent on a multi-day paddle trip. I bring more spare batteries than I'd need for a single day, sealed in their own dry protection separate from the cameras themselves, since a wet battery is just as much a liability as a wet camera body.
I also treat memory card offloading differently on a multi-day trip, since I can't count on reliably backing up to a laptop every night the way I might on a shore-based shoot. I carry redundant cards that write simultaneously where the camera supports it, and I offload to a portable drive whenever a dry, stable moment allows, rather than waiting for a single end-of-trip transfer that would risk everything on one unbacked set of cards.
That portable drive itself gets its own protection, sealed separately from the cameras and cards it's backing up, since a single point of failure that takes out both the original cards and the backup drive at the same time defeats the entire purpose of keeping redundant copies in the first place. I store that drive in a different bag entirely from the primary gear, so a single mishap can't reach both at once, which is a small habit that costs nothing and has already paid for itself more than once.
Water-based shoots have taught me more about gear discipline than almost any other environment I work in, mostly because the consequences of skipping a step show up fast and are hard to ignore. That discipline has transferred directly into how carefully I approach gear protection in every other demanding environment since.
