Working Safely Near Water on a Shoot

Water has caused more gear damage and more genuine safety concern across my career than almost any other single environmental factor, more than altitude, more than heat, more than rough terrain. It's deceptively approachable, easy to underestimate, and it doesn't announce danger the way a steep exposed ledge or a lightning storm does. That combination is exactly what makes it worth taking seriously every time.

Over years of surfing, paddling, and shooting from and around water in a lot of different conditions, I've built a specific set of habits around working near it safely, for both my gear and my own body. The Moment I Realized Water Was the Real Risk

A water housing fastener came loose against my wetsuit during a shoot years ago, letting water flood into a camera before I even realized what had happened. There was no dramatic single event, no fall, no obvious mistake, just a small equipment detail that quietly failed and cost me a body I only noticed was compromised once it was too late to prevent.

That experience reshaped how seriously I take water as a category of risk, distinct from the more visible dangers I'd trained myself to watch for in mountain or backcountry settings. Water damage often happens quietly, without the clear warning signs that other environmental hazards tend to provide.

Since then, I treat any proximity to water, not just active submersion, as a condition that demands its own specific checklist, rather than folding it into general outdoor caution and assuming standard weatherproofing will handle whatever comes up.

Reading Water Before I Ever Raise the Camera

Before any water-adjacent shoot, I spend real time actually observing the water itself: current strength, tide state and timing, wave pattern and interval, and how conditions are likely to change across the window I'm planning to shoot in. This observation happens before any gear comes out at all.

I've learned that water conditions that look calm on the surface can hide real current underneath, and I don't trust a visual read alone without accounting for tide charts, local knowledge, or direct conversation with anyone more familiar with a specific body of water than I am.

This upfront reading shapes everything downstream: where I position myself, how close I let a subject work to genuinely hazardous conditions, and whether a planned shot is worth attempting at all given what the water is actually doing that day, regardless of what it looked like in a reference photo.

Protecting Gear From Moisture, Not Just Submersion

Full submersion is the obvious risk, but a huge amount of water damage I've dealt with over the years has come from ambient moisture, spray, humidity, condensation, rather than a dramatic dunking. Gear doesn't need to go underwater to suffer real damage in a consistently wet or humid environment.

I pack silica packets and dehydrated rice directly with my gear on any water-adjacent shoot, a habit that pulls ambient moisture out of a bag or case over the course of a day rather than letting it accumulate unaddressed. It's a small, low-cost habit that's prevented more slow damage than almost any other single precaution.

I also treat every fastener, zipper, and seal on any water housing or protective case as something to check explicitly before every use, not just when it's new, since the loose-fastener failure I experienced firsthand happened on gear that had performed fine in every prior use before that one specific moment.

What Actually Goes Wrong on a Water Shoot

Beyond gear damage, the real safety risks near water tend to be underestimated precisely because water feels familiar and approachable in a way that exposed rock or extreme altitude doesn't. Currents, sudden depth changes, cold-water shock, and simple fatigue from repeated entries and exits all present real risk that's easy to discount.

I've also seen how quickly a situation can shift when a photographer becomes so focused on getting a shot that normal risk awareness narrows. Chasing a specific composition can pull attention away from a current pulling harder than expected or a subject drifting further than planned, and that narrowed focus is itself a real hazard.

Recognizing that the camera itself can become a distraction from basic situational awareness has made me more deliberate about building in regular check-ins with myself and anyone I'm shooting, stepping back from the viewfinder periodically just to reassess the actual conditions around us.

Positioning Myself Relative to the Subject and the Current

Where I physically position myself relative to a subject and the water's movement matters enormously, both for the shot and for safety. I try to stay positioned so that if conditions shift suddenly, I have a clear, unobstructed path to safety that doesn't require crossing the same current or hazard the subject is in.

I also think about positioning relative to a subject's own safety, not placing myself or asking a subject to position themselves somewhere that looks good in frame but creates real risk relative to a current, drop-off, or changing tide that isn't obvious from a simple visual read of the scene.

This kind of positioning discipline sometimes means passing on a specific angle or composition that would technically produce a stronger image, a tradeoff I've become comfortable making consistently once I recognized how easily an appealing composition can pull attention away from an actual safety consideration.

Working With a Safety Person on Water Jobs

On more demanding water shoots, surf, open water, fast-moving currents, I bring in a dedicated safety person whose only job is monitoring conditions and subjects, completely separate from any photography or production responsibility. That separation matters, since a photographer's attention is inherently split by the camera itself.

A dedicated safety role means someone is always watching conditions with full attention, able to call a halt to a shot the moment something changes, without needing to first put down a camera or interrupt their own creative focus to notice a problem developing.

I treat the cost of bringing in this role as non-negotiable for genuinely demanding water conditions, the same way I'd treat any other essential safety expense on a shoot. It's a cost worth building into the quote from the start rather than treating as an optional add-on.

The Gear I Trust and the Gear I Don't

Water housings and protective cases vary enormously in build quality, and I've learned to trust gear based on track record and careful, repeated inspection rather than manufacturer claims alone. A housing rated for a specific depth or condition still needs its actual seals and fasteners checked before every single use.

I also carry backup gear specifically for water-adjacent shoots, since a compromised housing or a flooded body on a water shoot is a different category of failure than a similar issue on dry land, often ending that specific gear's usability for the rest of the day entirely rather than allowing a quick field fix.

Gear insurance matters especially here. Water damage has been one of the more frequent and expensive categories of gear loss across my career, and treating insurance as a standard cost of doing this kind of work has saved me from what would otherwise be serious financial setbacks more than once.

Weather and Tide Windows I Won't Shoot Outside Of

I've built explicit rules for myself about conditions I won't shoot in regardless of how a client brief or a planned schedule wants to proceed: specific tide states, storm proximity, water temperature thresholds relevant to cold-water shock risk, and visibility conditions that would make a genuine emergency harder to respond to quickly.

Communicating these limits to a client in advance, before a shoot day rather than in the middle of one, sets clear expectations and prevents an uncomfortable in-field negotiation about whether to push forward into conditions I've already decided aren't worth the risk regardless of the pressure to deliver on schedule.

Holding these limits consistently, even when it means disappointing a tight production schedule, has never actually cost me a client relationship in a way I regret. Clients respect a photographer who takes safety seriously more consistently than they resent a schedule adjustment made for good reason.

What I Tell Clients Before a Water-Based Session

Before any water-based shoot, I walk clients through the actual safety plan directly: what conditions we're watching for, what the contingency looks like if those conditions appear, and what role, if any, a dedicated safety person will play during the session itself.

I've found that clients are almost universally receptive to this conversation when it's framed clearly and confidently, rather than apologetically. Safety planning read as competence and professionalism, not as an obstacle to getting the shot the client actually wants.

This upfront transparency also protects the working relationship if conditions do force a change in plan on the actual day. A client who understood the safety framework going in reacts very differently to a necessary adjustment than one who's hearing about risk for the first time in the middle of a shoot. Cold Water as Its Own Distinct Risk Category

Cold water presents a genuinely different risk profile than water temperature alone might suggest, since cold-water shock can affect breathing and coordination within seconds of entry, well before hypothermia itself becomes a factor. I treat cold-water conditions as their own specific category of planning rather than folding them into general water safety thinking.

For any shoot involving cold water entry, I make sure appropriate exposure protection, a wetsuit or dry suit suited to the actual temperature, is genuinely adequate for the conditions rather than a compromise made for the sake of a specific look or shot, since the visual difference rarely justifies the added physical risk of underdressing for genuinely cold water.

I also build in shorter work intervals for any subject in cold water, watching closely for early signs of reduced coordination or slurred communication that indicate cold is affecting someone faster than the shot list accounts for, and I'd rather cut a planned sequence short than push a subject past a safe exposure window for the sake of finishing a shot list on schedule.

This caution applies to my own exposure too when I'm shooting from within the water myself rather than from shore or a boat. I've learned to set my own time limits before entering cold water and to genuinely respect them, since impaired judgment from cold exposure affects a photographer's own decision-making just as much as it does a subject's.

Debriefing After a Water Shoot

After any water-based session, I run a short debrief with anyone involved, a safety person, an assistant, sometimes the subject or client themselves, specifically reviewing what worked in the safety plan and what, in hindsight, could have been handled better given how conditions actually unfolded that day.

This habit has caught small gaps before they became real problems on a subsequent shoot: a positioning choice that seemed fine in the moment but left less margin than I realized, a communication signal with a safety person that wasn't as clear as it needed to be under real working conditions.

I've found these debriefs work best when they happen close to the actual shoot, while specific details are still fresh, rather than as a vague general reflection weeks later once the particulars of that day's conditions have faded from memory.

Building this habit into every water-based shoot, regardless of how smoothly the day actually went, has steadily improved my safety planning over time in ways that a single dramatic incident alone never could have taught me nearly as effectively or as consistently.

Communicating Risk to a Subject Who Isn't a Professional

A working athlete or experienced water subject often has their own intuitive read on conditions, but a lot of the water-based work I do involves subjects without that specific background, someone genuinely comfortable in or near water but without a trained eye for the particular hazards a photographer needs to watch for on their behalf.

I've learned to communicate risk to these subjects in plain, specific terms rather than assuming shared context: naming an exact boundary I don't want them to cross, explaining exactly what a specific current or drop-off actually looks like from the water's surface, rather than a vague general caution to "be careful" that doesn't actually convey usable information.

I also build in a clear, simple signal system for any water shoot involving real risk, an agreed hand signal or verbal cue that means stop immediately, established before we're anywhere near the water itself, so there's no ambiguity about what a specific signal means once we're actually in a moment where it matters.

Treating this communication as seriously as the technical planning itself has prevented more close calls than any single piece of safety equipment. A subject who genuinely understands the specific risk in front of them makes better decisions in the moment than one who's simply been told, generically, that water can be dangerous.

I also repeat this safety briefing at the actual location, not just during earlier planning conversations, since conditions and a subject's own comfort level can shift meaningfully between when a shoot is booked and when everyone is actually standing at the water's edge. A fresh, on-site briefing catches anything that's changed since the original conversation.

Taken together, reading conditions honestly, protecting gear from moisture, positioning deliberately, bringing dedicated safety support when warranted, and communicating risk in plain, specific language, these habits have let me keep working in and around water consistently over a long career without a serious incident, which is exactly the outcome all of it is actually built to protect.

None of these habits are complicated on their own, and none require expensive specialized gear beyond what most photographers already own. What they require is genuine discipline, applying the same routine every time rather than only on the days that feel obviously risky, since the days that don't feel risky are often exactly when a real problem quietly develops.
