Vamos a Baja

Overview

This winter, we’re hitting the road from Lake Tahoe to the southern tip of Baja in search of sun, sand, and surf, capturing every moment through photo and video. Our coastal road trip celebrates winter van life by trading snow for saltwater and diving into everything the California and Baja coasts have to offer. From surf breaks and hot springs to wine country and whale encounters, we’ll be living outside, chasing light, and sharing stories from the road. Every day is an opportunity to explore, create, and connect.

What Will This Road Trip Be Like?

Picture pulling off at a sunset overlook, scarfing down tacos, and calling that coastal stretch home for the night. This trip is about chasing the endless summer—surfing, snorkeling, hiking, paddling, and uncovering hidden gems all along the way.

Mornings begin with coffee and ocean views.

On drive days, we’ll stretch our legs with quick hikes, surf sessions, or spontaneous beach dips.

On adventure days, we might kick things off with a sunrise surf or take it slow with pancakes before paddling out or diving in with a snorkel. Some days will be packed, others more relaxed, but all of them will be filled with curiosity and freedom. This road trip is a reminder that adventure is always just around the corner if you're willing to look.

Planned Adventures

Hiking:
From windswept headlands along Highway 1 to desert trails near La Paz, the journey south invites hiking in dramatically different ecosystems. Each stop reveals a new kind of solitude, perfect for content that blends wild terrain with personal challenge.

Hot Springs:
Along the Baja backroads, natural hot springs offer a raw and grounding reward after long travel days. Whether nestled in the Sierra de la Laguna or hidden in desert canyons, these geothermal oases pair perfectly with storytelling around recovery and reconnection.

Open Water Swimming:
The route from Tahoe to Baja brings an epic transition from alpine lakes to warm, swimmable seas. Conception Bay and the East Cape offer crystal-clear waters that turn swimming into an immersive, meditative experience.

Stand-Up Paddle-boarding:
From sunrise paddles in calm coves to gliding over reef systems near La Paz, this trip is made for SUP adventures. Every stop south reveals new textures of water, light, and wildlife to explore by board.

Snorkeling:
With stops like Conception Bay, La Paz, and the East Cape, snorkeling becomes a daily ritual of discovery. Swim with tropical fish, rays, and sea turtles just steps from camp, creating cinematic moments that don't require going far offshore.

Spearfishing:
The warm, nutrient-rich waters of Baja Sur provide a chance to responsibly harvest dinner while exploring the depths. Spearfishing here is not just sport—it’s sustenance, tradition, and a direct connection to the ocean.

Surfing:
From the hidden reefs near Ensenada to the clean point breaks of the East Cape, this trip chases surf across coastlines both iconic and untouched. Winter swells and minimal crowds set the stage for soulful, stripped-down sessions.

Wildlife Photography (birds & whales):
The southern Baja coastline comes alive each winter with breaching whales, soaring frigatebirds, and flocks of migratory species. Stops in La Paz and San José del Cabo offer front-row seats to some of the most photogenic wildlife spectacles in North America.
