Traveling To Egypt Anytime Soon With a Camera?
I paired up with Tamron Americas to bring to life a 1500 word guide, filled with images, about photographing historical monuments in Egypt. This story is focused on sailing/cruising the Nile, visiting the ancient sites of Luxor, visiting museums, and, of course, photographing the pyramids.
Personally, this project was one in a lifetime, as I achieved a childhood goal of visiting every continent. Finishing with Egypt, a childhood fascination, I couldn't be more in shock. Before I write any more of a sob story about achieving childhood dreams, here is a taste of the article:

How To Photograph Historical Landmarks In Egypt
Photographing historical landmarks in Egypt requires tough decisions—starting with what to pack. My bag is ready, but weight is a problem. I’m headed along the Nile River from Cairo to Abu Simbel with the goal of capturing Egypt’s iconic landmarks through my lens. But the plane’s strict weight limits mean I can’t take everything I want.
Now comes the hard part. Do I ditch clothing and smell? Do I leave a few camera essentials behind? Maybe no computer? Hmm… Staring at my bags on the floor, I know the answer. I don’t want to admit it, but I have to. Laughing, I accept my reality and say to myself: Well, I’m just going to smell bad while I am photographing Egypt.

Egypt Was Calling, So I Went (Photo Essay)
As a kid, I dreamed of visiting all seven continents. I’m proud to say, after this trip to Egypt, my 12 year-old-self would greet me with a smile and say, “Good job, Dalton, you did it. Now, were else else are we going to go? You’re only 31.” Laughing to myself as I write this, I understand my younger self was never satisfied. I’m still kind of like that, but, for now, it’s time to sit back and process this privilege I’ve been blessed to enjoy.

They never disappointed.
Duality, legacy, hardship,
there is no lack of challenges in Egypt.
Yet, this trip was filled with nothing
but appreciation.

When you picture ancient Egypt, you're likely imagining the wonders of Luxor. Why You Need a Guide in Luxor
The history of Luxor, known as Thebes during the Roman and Greek reigns of Egypt, is as rich as it is complex. Walking among these ancient structures, you’ll encounter hieroglyphics that tell stories spanning thousands of years. These intricate carvings and paintings are mesmerizing, but without someone to decode them, much of their meaning is lost.
While in Egypt on a 10-day Nile River cruise with Abercrombie & Kent I jotted these words down in my notebook:
“It’s hard to comprehend the timeline and scale of Egypt. The temples tower over you, and as you look at the hieroglyphics, you realize the temple took 180-200 years to build. It’s mind-bending. However, if I didn’t have Mohamed Rehim as my Egyptologist guide, explaining what I was looking at, I don’t think I would have appreciated the temples and tombs as much because I just would not understand.”
A guide not only explains the stories behind the carvings but also brings context to the staggering effort it took to build these sites. With so much to take in, their insights help prevent sensory overload and ensure you leave with a deeper understanding.

There’s more to see in Luxor than you could cover in five days, but here are a few highlights and tips to maximize your experience:
1. Valley of the Kings and Queens
These famous burial sites are awe-inspiring, with underground tombs revealing intricate artwork and hieroglyphics that have survived for millennia. Don’t miss the extra tickets for the tombs of Seti I and Ramesses V & VI—these tombs are especially well-preserved and stunning. While King Tut’s tomb is iconic, it can feel underwhelming compared to the grandeur of others.
The Valley of the Queens is less crowded but equally fascinating. You may even have entire tombs to yourself, making it an unforgettable experience. Guides can point out unique features in the artwork, such as depictions of daily life and religious rituals that provide deeper insights into ancient Egyptian culture.
2. Temple of Karnak
Sprawling across 200 acres, the Temple of Karnak is one of the largest religious structures ever built. Set aside a full day to explore its halls, columns, and sacred spaces. Many visitors are astonished by the Great Hypostyle Hall, a forest of towering columns intricately carved with hieroglyphics and symbols that tell stories of devotion and power.
