When I learned how to surf at 8 years old, I was captivated by the legends of barrels so big they can swallow freighters, wipeouts that surfers never returned from, and the relentless raw power of the ocean. For my landlocked 8-year-old brain, I couldn't fathom this. 

Yet, as I write, I know, first hand, all of these can be true.

While on our road trip through, Baja creating content for the release of the Ford Bronco, we messed up. In San Juanico (aka Scorpion Bay) we took the Bronco onto the beach in hopes of snapping a shot of spraying water at sunset, we swamped it, but it was an adventure. Fish tacos, a few beers, and sunburns, that is often what Baja Mexico gets its name for, but that isn’t all this 1000 mile peninsula has to offer. The golden beaches often have surf-able waves, the mountains contain waterfalls, and the salty-waters are home to one of the most diverse aquatic biospheres. When you come down to Baja for vacation, you could sit on the beach, or you could make memories that will last you a lifetime when you step a little outside of your comfort zone and head out on an epic adventure.

Driving in Baja Mexico became accessible to all drivers with the completion of Mexico Federal Highway 1, also called, Trans-Peninsula Highway. While the old highway was more of a dirt path with steep cliffs and boulder filled arroyos, Mexico Highway 1 is a two lane asphalt road that bounces from coast to coast and town to town. For those of us who love to explore the Baja Peninsula, driving the Trans-Peninsula Highway no longer requires nerves of steel.

We headed to Baja Mexico for a three months of winter to surf and camp on every beach we could. Loading up the van with surfboards, snorkel gear, and sunscreen we did our best to explore on dirt roads, get sunburnt, and surf throughout the Baja Peninsula. Our goal was to avoid the crowds, but still catch good waves. I would be remiss to mention we missed a couple of swells, got cut up by the reef, and punctured a few boards, but the trip was a success. While the trips wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows, we had a splendid time in Baja chasing waves and sleeping on beaches.

Beach camping in Baja, Mexico is dreamlike. Where else can you; wake up to the sound of waves crashing, making a cup of coffee, and taking it out to your chair planted in the sand to watch the sunrise for free? Yes, using “dreamlike” is over-done, but it fits, I promise. After 7 years of living on the road, I’ve realized there isn’t much out there which compares to Baja. More specifically, Baja Sur. While several beaches have become over-populated in recent years, Baja’s coastline is still relatively unpopulated. The beaches that are crowded are often close to a main road with easy access. My guess, if you just go a few turns north, or south, you will find something similar, if not better, without anyone. We were hesitant, at first, as we got a lay of the land and understood how packed the sand was. Smashing corners felt a bit risky, as did putting the pedal to the metal, but we wanted to kick up some dust for the shots. In the back of our minds, we couldn’t shake the reality that breaking breaking down here had consequences. Running out of gas in Cataviña had smaller consequences, but it would not be ideal. Regardless, we were committed to fun and creating stellar images.

Conception Bay in Baja is a mind blowing combination of calm, warm water and an adult playground. Offering access to dozens of beaches Bahia Concepcion, as it is called in Spanish, directly translate to Bay of Concepcion, but most ex-Pats and travelers call this area Conception Bay. This absolute must stop when you travel to Baja is a long, narrow bay that stretches over thirty miles from the Sea of Cortez. Mountains encased the bay both sides with only narrow openings at the northern end. Located between Mulege and Loreto along the Sea of Cortez, Bahia Concepcion offers access to outstanding beach camping, each with their own spectacular views and reasons to visit. 

San Juanico is a small fishing village with a large surfing problem. Myth and legends are told among the surfing community of a mile-long ride from third point to first. Some have even gone on and said the link-up has been done from fourth peak… insane! The best part of this sleepy town, other than the surfing, is the beach camping.

Cerritos Beach is a rapidly growing surf oasis that is less touristy than Cabo and still a hidden gem. Only an hour away Cabo San Lucas, and 15 minutes from Todos Santos, Playa de Cerritos has great waves for surfing as well as safe surf for swimming. The laidback, low-key vibe draws surfers, ex-pats, and travelers from all over the world.

In a split second while you are walking down the street, the cartoon lightbulb flashes on. Your mind and heart eagerly agree that the idea is perfect, the timing is right, and you should do it.
