Santa Cruz Wall Art as a Gift

Gift giving gets easier when you start with a person instead of a product. Think about who will open it, where they live, and what they miss or love. Santa Cruz wall art is a good fit for a surprising number of people, from a surfer who has been paddling out for decades to a friend who left town years ago and still talks about it. Here is how I would think through choosing The Stairwell as a gift, including size, material, and a few honest limits.

The Stairwell
from $26.95

This print comes from Santa Cruz, CA during the string of summer swells in 2026. I noticed the wave aligning with the stairwell while scouting a place to surf. At the time, nobody was surfing the wave, but I decided to head back to my van for the camera.

I waited for almost an hour in the stairwell for a surfer and wave to align.

Thankfully, I stuck out the wait as I love this image.

Additional Information:

Please allow 5-10 days for printing and shipping.

I have the ability to print custom sizes and material (like wood, gatorboard, etc.). If this interests you, please reach out to dj@dalton-johnson.com for a free quote with the size and material you desire.

First, the picture itself. A surfer rides a glassy green wave in the distance, seen through the gap of a concrete stairwell. A sunlit brick wall glows gold on the left, a shadowed wall fills the right, and blurred leaves sit in the top corner. It is a real surf photograph, not an illustration, and I shot it from land in Santa Cruz, California, in early summer 2026. It suits people who like the ocean but do not want a cliche.

Next, the person. For a surfer, the draw is the wave and the barrel, and the way the frame lets you look at it as if you were standing there. For someone who has moved away from Santa Cruz, the draw is memory. I lived in Santa Cruz for five years, and I know how much a familiar kind of light can mean once you are somewhere else. For a couple with a beach house, it is simply a handsome, colorful image that works with natural wood and white walls.

Size comes next. The print is horizontal, so think about the wall it will hang on. Smaller sizes such as 8x10, 8x12, and 11x14 suit a desk, a shelf, or a narrow wall. Midsize options such as 12x18 and 16x24 work in a bedroom or office. The big sizes, 20x30 and 24x36, give the wave real presence over a couch. If you do not know the wall, a middle size is a safe choice.

Material matters just as much. For this print my pick is metal, because I think the green water and golden brick really pop. Metal is the most durable and resists UV light well, but it is the most expensive and can throw a lot of glare. Paper is the cheapest, especially once you add a frame, though it needs a frame to look finished. Canvas has a softer, textured look with little glare, and larger canvas costs more. If you are not sure about the recipient's lighting, canvas is forgiving.

A practical point about timing. Printing and shipping take about 5 to 10 days, so order ahead of a birthday or holiday instead of the week before. If the person has an unusual wall or a particular material in mind, such as wood or gatorboard, custom sizes and materials are available by free quote.

I will be straight with you on one thing. This print is new, so I do not have a pile of gift stories to share, and I am not going to make any up. What I can tell you is what the photograph is and how it is made.

If you are still undecided, picture the moment it is opened. A gift like this works best when it prompts a story, whether that is a first wave, a favorite stretch of coast, or a road trip someone never forgot. A print cannot do all of that, but it can start the conversation.

The Stairwell is an open edition and a human made photograph. I try to sign each print, though I cannot guarantee it, and prices start at $26.95.
