So, we woke up at 3:30 a.m. with a bold plan: hit three stunning kayaking spots in a single day—Emerald Bay, Bonsai Rock, and Zephyr Cove.
I have driven to Alaska and back. Each way taught me new lessons about timing, route choices, and personal limits. Without knowing what to expect, we left Mulegé in the afternoon, eager to find a place to camp along the beach. Not driving very far, we dropped into the Conception Bay area and were immediately stunned by the beauty. A massive bay stretched before us, dotted with islands and ripe with camping spots nestled along its shores. The water shimmered under the late afternoon sun, and we instantly knew this was where we wanted to spend the night.
Reds and oranges filled the sky as the sunrise light reflected off the clouds, a welcome sign some warmth was on the way. This morning in Sedona, Arizona was cold as we hiked to find the Subway Cave, which is said to be the home of a vortex. While I am not totally sure what a vortex is, I wanted to find one. So, down the trail we went.
Just ten miles south of Mammoth Lakes along Highway 395, Convict Lake is an alpine lake surrounded by rugged peaks waiting to be kayaked on. This glacially carved gem in Inyo National Forest is a favorite for outdoorsy people, offering year-round kayaking and paddleboarding. The lake’s mirror-like surface reflects the towering mountains, creating a breathtaking backdrop as you glide across the calm waters.
When the cold months rolled in at home in Lake Tahoe, California, we decided to head south in search of adventure, warm waters, and fresh seafood. Baja's rugged coastline and endless opportunities seemed like the perfect place to spend a winter chasing fish beneath the waves. Our convoy—a van built for living and a Ford Bronco—was packed to the brim with spearfishing gear, surfboards, and the essentials for beachside camping. With three people and a dog, we were ready for anything the Baja peninsula could throw our way. Every mile south spiked our curiosity, from bustling towns like Guerrero Negro to remote beaches like El Canejo that felt like they belonged to us alone. The freedom of the open road was omnipresent, and the promise of the ocean’s bounty—of fish or waves—kept our spirits high.
Hot springs on the beach sound like a dream, but in La Ventana, they’re a reality. Just north of this kite-surfing addicted city of Baja Sur lies Playa Agua Caliente, a unique beach where you can soak in natural hot springs at low tide along the Sea of Cortez. These hidden treasures bubble right out of the sand, offering an unforgettable experience for those who make the trip north. The trifecta of secluded beach, desert landscape, and floating islands makes this spot dreamy, at least that is how I felt.
When Kristin and I were on a family vacation in Cerritos Beach, surfing and swimming filled most of our days. But we craved a change of pace and decided on a sunset hike to an abandoned sugar port near Todos Santos. What started as a spur-of-the-moment decision turned into the highlight of our trip, combining stunning views, historical intrigue, and an unforgettable sunset.
There are those “by happen stance” occasions that just happen to work out, this is one of them. Driving back to the lower 48 from Alaska, I needed to use the bathroom. So, while in British Columbia, Kristin and I stopped in a large parking lot with bathroom. This lot seemed to be in the middle of no where, but that didn’t surprise me as there are several random lots along the drive from Alaska to the lower 48. However, very few of those lots had swarms of people. So, I asked somebody, “Why are there so many people here?”
They laughed and said they were doing the prettiest hike to in all of British Columbia, Joffre Lakes.
After a long day of driving our van south along the Baja Peninsula, Kristin and I stumbled upon a hidden gem: Conception Bay. Tucked among Baja’s rugged eastern coastline, this serene bay is the perfect destination for stand-up paddleboarding (SUP), and it left us questioning why we hadn’t come sooner.
Sedona is a city I have returned to several times. I am not sure what exactly draws me back to this town of red dirt, but I find myself here at least once a year. On a recent visit, I hiked the Seven Sacred Pools just after a rain and continued my hike onward to the Soldier Pass Cave. After clinging for dear life on the side of a muddy hill, I finally made it to this cave that everyone rants and raves about on social media and Reddit threads. While I am typically not one to seek out social media spots, Soldier Pass Cave caught my eye. Its stunning formation and the challenge it offers make it a bucket-list hike for anyone visiting Sedona.
Mammoth Lakes, California, is a destination I return to time and again. Tucked along Highway 395, it offers a perfect combination of adventure, relaxation, and breathtaking scenery. With its natural hot springs scattered across the rugged landscape, Mammoth Lakes has become my favorite place to unwind after a day of exploring Yosemite, skiing at Mammoth Mountain, or adventuring through the Sierra wilderness.
Camping at Kenai Lake gave us the perfect reset after two intense weeks of road-tripping in our van around Alaska’s Kenai Peninsula. Kristin and I were tired—physically and mentally—and in desperate need of a place to park, relax, and recharge. When we stumbled upon a camping spot on iOverlander right on the edge of Kenai Lake, we knew we’d found our answer.
As our alarms sounded at 3:30 am, we packed up our van and hit the road, eager to experience one of California’s most iconic landmarks. The plan? Arrive at Bixby Bridge for sunrise. Neither of us was sure whether sunrise or sunset would showcase the bridge at its best, but sunrise felt like the right choice for our night-owl road trip vibe.
When road tripping the Pacific Coast Highway, the Bixby Creek Bridge stands as an architectural marvel that effortlessly merges with the breathtaking natural landscape of Big Sur. The first time I drove across this bridge, I knew that I had to stop and get out, to look at what I was crossing. It was kind of terrifying, at first. What sets this bridge apart is not just its structural elegance but its ability to evoke a sense of wonder and appreciation for the raw beauty that defines the region.
Driving along Highway One in Big Sur is like flipping through a photo book of California’s greatest hits. On this particular day, the skies were impossibly blue, the hills were lush and green from recent rains, and the Pacific Ocean seemed to stretch forever into the horizon. There were four of us packed into the car, road-tripping without much of a plan—just friends looking for adventure.
I was behind the wheel, enjoying the rhythm of the winding road, when someone in the backseat shouted, “Hey, this looks awesome, stop here!”
