Yosemite Reintroduces Reservation System for Firefall in 2024

May 06, 2024 in Uncategorized

In a move aimed at managing the overwhelming demand for the annual Horsetail Fall Firefall event, Yosemite National Park has introduced a reservation system for entrance during key weekends in February 2024. The Horsetail Fall Firefall, a breathtaking phenomenon where the waterfall appears to be ablaze during sunset, attracts visitors from around the world.

Entrance Reservations:

  1. Dates Requiring Reservations: Weekends of February 10–11, February 17–19, and February 24–25, 2024.
  2. No Reservation Needed on Weekdays: Visitors arriving Mondays through Fridays (except Monday, February 19) won't require a reservation.
  3. Reservation Fee: A nominal fee of $2 (non-refundable) is required, in addition to the $35 entrance fee per car, valid for seven days.
  4. Reservation Website: Recreation.gov
  5. Reservation Availability:
    • Starting at 8 am Pacific time on December 1, 50% of day-use reservations are available for all three weekends.
    • Remaining 50% available two days prior to the reservation date.
  6. Reservation Limitations: Each user can make one reservation per seven days. The reservation holder, with a photo ID, must be an occupant of the arriving vehicle.
  7. Cancellation Policy: Cancelled reservations become immediately available on Recreation.gov.
  8. Day-Use Permits: Valid for seven consecutive days for unlimited entries.

In-Park Camping, Lodging, or Vacation Rentals:

If you have a reservation for any of the following, you do not need an additional reservation:

  • Day-use reservation (valid for 7 consecutive days for unlimited re-entries)
  • Campground reservation at Upper Pines, Wawona, Hodgdon Meadow, or Camp 4
  • Lodging reservation at The Ahwahnee, Yosemite Valley Lodge, or Curry Village
  • Private lodging or vacation rental reservation in Wawona, Yosemite West, or Foresta
  • Commercial use authorization

Additional Information:

  • Payment: Entrance fee ($35) or display of an annual/lifetime pass is required upon arrival.
  • Timing: Reservations are highly sought after, so be prepared to make them promptly at 8 am Pacific time.
  • Account: Ensure you have a Recreation.gov account, are logged in, and ready to secure your reservation.

This strategic reservation system aims to address concerns related to traffic congestion, parking, safety, and the potential impacts on natural and cultural resources during the immensely popular Horsetail Fall Firefall event. As anticipation builds for this natural spectacle, visitors are encouraged to plan ahead and secure their reservations for an unforgettable experience in Yosemite National Park.
